worst musical instrument to listen to
accordion
shareIt really depends on the context and how it's used.
Accordion, for instance, sounds terrific on any Weird Al Yankovic medley.
I was tempted to say, "Stylophone", but darnit if David Bowie didn't use one to terrific effect.
The worst musical instrument is the one that is played badly: with little skill and no love, and then they all sound terrible.

I don't know whether to laugh or cry. That's amazingly bad.
shareIt took me awhile to dig this up, but you might appreciate the comedic genius of this level of deliberate failure:

Keyboards. I hate it. I love 60s and 70s music and songs get worse when the keyboard kicks in.
shareThe Scottish bagpipes are excruciating to listen to unless you are about 200 yards away from them.
I can't agree about the accordion. Here is Yann Tiersen's La Noyee from the soundtrack to Amelie featuring the French accordion. Unfortunately only in 480p. It's short, sweet and beautiful:

better to be in another country when they break out the bagpipes.
shareI can't find an audio clip, there was a one-time Batman henchwoman named Doe, who worked for Chandell (Liberace) and her schtick was she played the bagpipes so badly it drove one unconscious.

I knew there'd be those who dislike the bagpipes, but I love them. They are loud, yes, but when played by a skilled musician, they can elicit emotions of sorrow or heroism.
shareThere's a Chinese wind instrument that sounds like a bagpipe on meth, but I don't know what it's called.
But it's just as excruciating to listen to as you'd think.
Not only Yann Tiersen
Astor Piazzolla has some absolutely amazing pieces for Accordion.

And the main theme in Il Postino is one of the best themes ever written for Accordion

When it comes to bagpipes, they can be excruciating... until you listen to musicians like Liam O'Flynn

Came here to say this. For some reason, every parade in Canada typically features a military band and there are always bagpipes... so many bagpipes.
Bagpipes are made from the skin of dead animals. The instrument was invented to repel invaders. They were never meant to be heard recreationally.
The only time I ever can tolerate them is when they are gently used in the background of certain middle-of-the-road pop songs such as Mull of Kintyre, or Rhythm of My Heart.
I think beginner oboe, or any double reed instrument.
sharethe violin is grating
shareIt is, especially when its really out of tune, but I think oboe is worse. Oboes squawk.
shareHow 'bout this passionate violin? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YjHYzFHZKrM
shareEasy, the recorder!
In most cases it’s not what you play it’s how you play it.
In the recorders case, whether it’s a professional recorder player or a primary school orchestra it always sounds like an insufferable squeaky racket.
On the upside the one I had at primary school was bright green and everyone else has boring brown and white ones.

That's pretty horrible.
shareSounds like a herd of wasps,
shareVuvuzelas aren't a musical instrument, they're a torture device.
shareSome don't like Yanni music,e.g.,"the 2500 year old Armenian instrument" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_jaGPxHMX1I
