Do you prefer films that simply entertain? Or those that challenge? Or a bit of both?

Also, why do some people not like difficult and challenging movies and prefer to be entertained whilst others LOVE movies that are difficult and challenging and for the most part find entertainment, with some exceptions, shallow and unimaginative? What is the secret and mystery behind it all?

Cheers.

P.S. Can some films be BOTH? Some say for instance the German film "Das Experiment" (2001) was one, as were perhaps Michael Haneke's "Funny Games" (1997)? And Tarantino movies? And "A Clockwork Orange" (1971)? And Japanese "pinku" films? And others?

Challenge. I like thinking when watching movies. I find them more interesting than some mindless entertaining movie.

Unless it's Sci Fi, I simply want to be entertained and if I want to think, I'll watch a documentary.

I tend to like movies that I have no idea what is going to happen then one that follows a formulaic plot. That’s why I tend to like movies based on real aspects of people’s lives.

reply

Depends on my mind.

Entertainment, no contest!

Real life has been throwing me no end of challenge and drama for the last few years, I don't need to pay to see more. I pay to get my mind off of the real challenges, so entertain me! Give me explosions and laugh lines and cartoons and superhero movies!

reply

I always prefer a movie where I'm guessing what will happen.

reply

Either, depending on my mood

I can handle Schindler's List or Irreversible or some other pretty heavy story every so often but the superheroes, slashers and action movies are really great to just chill out with for the mindless action and explosions

Sometimes turning off the brain for 90 minutes is a swell time

reply

It depends really, what I consider to be idiotic is what some consider to be challenging and intellectual.
