You either hate them, think they're just fine or you just don't get what the big deal is. Here's a couple for me:
Back to Future (1985) - Or basically the entire trilogy. The thing is, I don't even dislike 'em, I think they're fine. I just never got they hype for them. Maybe if I grew up in the era I would've gotten it? I don't know.
Naightmare on Elm Street films: Maybe it's because I don't care for Slashers that much but those films in particular just never appealed to me.
Argo (2012) - It's been almost a decade & I still have no freaking idea what the big deal was with this film. Best picture, really? This one? Oh well...
Forrest Gump (1994) - Another one that I think is ok but still don't get what the big deal is with the film. Gary Sinise is pretty good though.
What are some films that YOU think are maybe a bit overrated or overhyped? Again, it's all about personal preferences
I don't care for most superhero movies. I do like some of them, don't get me wrong. They just all feel so formulaic to me and I feel like if you've seen one you've seen them all, and they really aren't that great.
Most sequels tend to bore me by the third or fourth movie, but I do still like Mad Max, Planet of the Apes, Batman, original Star Wars and some James Bond.
I prefer genres like Film Noir, Westerns, War, Science Fiction, Comedy and Action over watching the same old franchise crap tbh.
I own so many Tom Cruise films and enjoy most of his movies but I've never watched the Mission Impossible films other than the first, something I need to change!
Second one is the only bad one. Atrocious. Third is solid
But you should definitely check out the second half of the series. The second trilogy if you will. Mission Impossible 4, 5 & 6 are just absolutely amazing.
X2 I always remember Celtic Kevin Garnett shouting Top of the World after winning a World Championship and thought he was a Cagney White Heat fan not realizing it came from the movie Titanic.
Yeah, Titanic was stupid
We all knew the ending anyway and then Billy Zane started running around with a gun and Rose couldn't scoot over two feet so Jack wouldn't freeze to death..? And tossing a million dollar trinket into the ocean?!?
Any prison movie—Green Mile, Shawshank—unless it involves a lot of hot nude women.
Schindler‘s List
E.T.
Baby Driver
Black Panther
Any Fast/Furious movie after the first
Any Transformers movie
The Shape of Water
Brokeback Mountain
Any Star Wars ANYTHING after the first 3 movies
Any George Lucas Director’s Cut after the first Director’s Cut he does of a given film of his.
Same thing for Ridley Scott fucking around with Blade Runner.
All YA novel-based franchises: Twilight, Hunger Games, Maze Runner, Divergent. Young adults (and, while we’re at it, who the fuck thinks someone 14 to 18 years old is an adult? I mean, other than some zygote who is 14 to 18 years old) have shit taste, and apparently no one who buys these books and movies is a heterosexual male.
I watched it, but I deeply regretted it: Gladiator, a chick flick disguised as a boy movie. Some woman who thought she loved me sent me the DVD for Valentine’s Day. She really wanted to fuck Russell Crowe (at least, she did 200 pounds ago). I watched it, then tossed it in the trash.
Basically all popular horror movies like IT and IT 2, Annabelle, Hereditary, Final Destination, Chucky, The Exorcist, Freddy, Jason, Freddy x Jason, etc. etc. For me, horror movies are one of the most formulaic genre ever, alongside zombie movies and found footage movies.
They're all pretty much the same. I don't know why some of them were so popular as if they broke new grounds or something.
I get the first SAW and the couple first found footage films (Blair Witch, REC) were groundbreaking and new at the time. I respect that. But then all the sequels and copycats are just regurgirating the same gimmick over and over again. Bleh.
That said, I have some horror movies I like for some unknown reasons: Drag Me to Hell, The Rite, Sanctum, House of Wax (the one with Paris Hilton, lol. She's actually fine in it.)
i'd push back a little bit against that, in that there are some that are genuinely well made and use the format in a fun way.
(rec) for eg is one of the great horror movies of the last 20 years in my books. maybe the only film that truly frightened me as an adult, not to oversell it.
lake mungo is another film i absolutely love, on my top 100, though you could probably classify that more as fake documentary.
but i'm actually a bit of a found footage fanatic, in that i generally love the format, and even when the movies are self-evidently complete crap, i'll watch them and get a kick out of them.
nobody asked for it, but here are some ff movies that i think are legitimately good/great, besides the two i mentioned:
cannibal holocaust
zero day
exhibit a
the sacrament
afflicted
dirties
be my cat
operation avalanche
the poughkeepsie takes
megan is missing
grave encounters
willow creek (this is a bit of a cheat, cuz the film is mostly really dull, but it has a great, great scene at the end)
digging up the marrow
creep
butterfly kisses
the taking of deborah logan
the den
honestly, i'd stand by all these films as being fun and entertaining and occasionally genuinely creepy.
