He's responsible for her death, although I don't know if it was murder or accident, he knows he's legally culpable.
If he didn't know what had happened to her he'd have cooperated with searching for a "missing person", but instead he lawyered up and refused to talk, and if she'd been alive then refusing to cooperate with the search could have resulted in her dying from lack of help. Nobody would do that, and make themselves the object of this much suspicion, if the alternative weren't being arrested for murder.
