labor day was the worst day as a kid
i remember trying to stay out as long as possible to hold on to the summer. the dreaded prospect of starting school the next day.
sharei remember trying to stay out as long as possible to hold on to the summer. the dreaded prospect of starting school the next day.
shareYeah, and also knowing that the DAYS were getting SHORTER and you'd have to be HOME when it got DARK at 5pm, instead of being able to stay out riding your bike until almost 9pm.
So that's also 4 HOURS LESS of PLAYTIME to mess around without being under SUPERVISION again once you got home again.
Yep. It wasn't a day off to look forward to like adults.
The funny thing is, September is now my favorite month. The worst of the summer heat has eased (typically, if not always) and there is a wonderful hint of autumn in the air.
It's still in the UPPER 90's (NEAR 100 F) here in TX, and the KIDS usually also go back to school in MID AUGUST and then get out in MID MAY.
It also won't begin to cool off until the end of OCT, and HURRICANE SEASON also lasts until NOV.
And the LEAVES on the trees usually disappear sometime in mid DEC, but are back again about 8 wks later in MID FEB.
Spring breakers also invade the COAST and the beaches about MID MARCH.
If you want to see my blood pressure go up, start talking about Texas.
I'm not being serious and I try very hard not to have my political views air out here outside of the Politics area.
But Texas has been particularly egregious lately and it has me fuming.
The electrical grid, the abortion legislation, and these jerks think they should be pushing their weight around.
And Ted Cruz, the border issues. Good lord !
Try living here where your VOTE COUNTS for ABSOLUTELY NOTHING due to the way they've GERRYMANDERED the state.
The DISTRICT that I'm in is shaped like a SERPENT and SNAKES all the way down to another CITY about 150 miles SOUTH of here, for example, as a way to ENSURE that those who RUN for OFFICE get to CHOSE those who VOTE for them, instead of letting the POPULATION CHOSE who they want to VOTE into OFFICE.
They've also just played a VERY IMPRESSIVE AD on the NEWS (DATELINE WHITEHOUSE) in regards to the ABORTION ISSUE where a young girl explains how the NEW LAW forces her to bear the CHILD of the BROTHER or the FATHER who RAPED her, and she also points out the HYPOCRISY of how people in TX complain about NOT wanting anyone to CONTROL their BODY (in regards to getting VACCINATED against COVID), yet feel FREE to CONTROL HER BODY.
Eventually they'll also load the VIDEO clip so you can watch it.

I was hoping and kinda figured I wasn't picking on someone who was gonna get riled up, and there are many good citizens of Texas who I am sure are prudent and thoughtful. I'm glad you are one of them.

Texas is now a TALIBAN COUNTRY

Take it to the politics board. No one cares if you are "trying very hard not to talk politics"
shareHow interesting that you chose to REPLY back to ME, when all I did was talk ABOUT THE WEATHER, prior to the other poster bringing up the other matters.
So WHY didn't you REPLY back to THEM instead of to me???
FYI: The VIDEO link is also for SNEPTS (not you).
It must be because of the way you get your KICKS by TROLLING me.
Right???
And since NO ONE was talking to you, that also means NO ONE has a reason to care what it is that you think or have to say about it.
But at least have SENSE ENOUGH to address your COMPLAINT to the RIGHT PERSON, or to the person who first mentions the ISSUE that you've chosen to GRIPE about.
And please also NOTE how ABORTION (the subject of the VIDEO) is a PERSONAL HEALTH MATTER or a MEDICAL ISSUE (not a POLITICAL matter).
🙄
I assume you are talking more politics. Take it to the correct board.
shareYou STILL didn't ANSWER the QUESTION:
WHY PICK on me when the other poster is the one who first mentions the ISSUES that you GRIPE about???
And Why don't you also STOP TROLLING TOPICS, TAKING them OFF TOPIC, and behaving as if you're some kind of a SELF APPOINTED MESSAGE BOARD COP when you ARE NOT.
Because No one likes you being A RUDE GROUCH either.
So the NEXT TIME that you have another COMPLAINT, at least also have MANNERS enough to send someone a PM instead of trying to be an ANNOYING PEST here in PUBLIC.
🙄

shareI'm surprised at how many kids went back to school last week. It was always the Tuesday after Labour Day for me. I guess they get Fall Break now which we never had and they have to make up for it somewhere.
shareFor us the first day of school was the first Wednesday after labor day.
But yeah, labor day, like Sundays, or the latter part of Sunday, always brought on a bummed-out melancholic feeling. At least for us, the fact that the first week of school was only 3 days kind of softened the blow a bit.
I also started school on that Wednesday so that's why us locals on Tuesday had a great day taking back control over our beach community as the summer kids all cleared out on Labor Day.
shareMinnesota passed a law some years ago that elementary and secondary schools could not start the school year until after Labor Day. It's for the benefit of the resort business (it's usually all about the $$ 🙄) because they complained that schools starting before Labor Day cost them the $$ that could be earned that last 3-day weekend of the summer. There are, however, a few exceptions for some very small districts.
shareOuch. Gotta love the greed.
shareFelt that
shareI remember that feeling. Summer was actually tolerable as a kid because at least it meant having almost three months off. On Labor Day you watched the few remaining hours of freedom wither away. There was some consolation, though, knowing that the holiday season was approaching: Halloween, Thanksgiving and the winter break that included Christmas and New Years Day.
Nowadays I can't stand the summer, especially July and August. I'm now glad to see September come, and still consider the holiday season the best time of the year. The only time I get that sinking feeling is around mid-afternoon on Christmas Day, when I realize the day is coming to an end and it means waiting another whole year for it to come again.
My home is not heated properly and the electric bill goes nuts when we have to use the heat.
(Not even that great in the summer). It's comfortable and well insulated but not efficient.
So I don't mind the hot weather (my area is somewhat temperate) and don't enjoy having to wear all kinds of stuff to be out in the cold and wet (but we sure need a lot more wet these days).
I wish the Holidays meant more but I have spent most of them relatively alone so I'm not particularly enthused.
I guess I do philosophically enjoy that there are different seasons, but days getting shorter is not something I look forward to.
Aww, I feel the same way about Christmas. That week between Christmas and New Year’s is so flat and sometimes bleak. I never was a fan of New Year’s Eve either. Such a forced holiday. Everyone throwing their faces in front of cameras, waiting all night to count to 10.
shareI never could understand the fixation with New Years Eve, either. Okay, it's a different year, I get that. The holidays are over, you hang up a new calendar and go back to the daily grind. Not something I see worth making a big deal about.
shareI always loved the start of school. By March I was done with it though.
I was surprised to learn later how many schools in the south and west USA start back in mid and even early August. Labor Day is the first 3 day weekend of the school year for them.
I don't get why they would want school to start in August when they know Labor Day is only a week or two away. Start the school year and then immediately have a three-day holiday weekend? It doesn't make sense. Every school I attended always started classes on the day after Labor Day and ran until approximately June 10.
shareI hate September. Sometimes it's warm and sometimes it's cold. It doesn't know what month it wants to be. Labour Day was just a reminder that school was about to start and the weather was about to be messed up.
