What's the longest film you've seen in one sitting?

Excluding quick bathroom breaks (because when you gotta go, you gotta go) what's the longest film you've seen without having to watch in parts?

For me it's either "Gone With The Wind" or "Zack Snyder's Justice League". Both the run times are very similar. I've considered watching "Dr. Mabuse the Gambler" which is almost 5 hours, but so far I haven't seen it.

Red Cliff (combined version).
there is a version of Red Cliff Part 1 (2008) and 2 (2009) thats combined together to be one release. i believe it's 4:48 min. comes on 2 discs.

got stuck seeing titanic in the theater twice.

Now that you mention it, it also saw both Kill Bill films back to back. That would exceed 4 hours.

Once Upon a Time in America.

reply

Which version? I've only ever seen the director's cut.

reply

I got the DVD about 10 years ago. I just remember it was around 4 hours long.

reply

I believe that's the same one I saw.

In the theatre
Hamlet (1996) 4hrs 2 minutes

At home I've watched the lord of the rings extended trilogy in one sitting. Washroom breaks happened during the changing of the discs and food was procured during credits.

reply

I'll allow those breaks.

For me it’s probably Cleopatra (1963) at over 4 hours. I used to watch it stoned and it felt like it was 8 hours long. 😀

Ben Hur (1959) 3h 44m

has to be love exposure. that comes in just under 4 hours. i'd actually planned on spreading it over 2 nights, but i got so into it i ended up watching it all at once.

i have an almost zero tolerance policy for long movies now, with the odd exception. i know they have their place, and if that's what people want then i'm glad those things are out there for them. but for myself, i crave concision and brevity in almost everything.

i've read too many endlessly long books, too many books that should have been a magazine article, too many magazine articles that should have been half the length, and sat through far too many endlessly long movies.

brevity is a gift to the world. it's better to say too little than too much.

I've always wanted to watch Love Exposure, but the run time was a turnoff. Was it as good as people say?

reply

i remember liking it a lot, raving about it the next day to anyone who'd listen.

but i have a feeble memory, and i can barely remember anything about it - so i don't really feel like i can really recommend a film that i barely recall!

i think, if you have liked sono's other stuff, you would likely find lots to enjoy in it. one thing i remember is thinking that it was so all over the place, so tonally different in places that it was almost like watching three different movies, which made it go down a lot easier.

reply

Sounds good. If I can find it. I'll check it out on a day I have 4 hours to spare.

reply

On top of a few listed here I'll also add The Iceman Cometh (1973) at 3 hours 59 minutes.

reply

Either LOTR with all the extended scenes (got to be close to 4 hours) or Gettysburg.
