Is it okay to say to someone "you're really short"

I ask because I just read this:

“‘Wow, you’re really short.’ I get that a lot,” Scarlett Johansson, who stands at 5-foot-3 told Cosmopolitan UK. “[They say] ‘You’re a lot shorter than I thought you were.’ I’m like, ‘Wow, how is that ever okay to say to someone?'” she asked. “It’s so bizarre. Yes. It’s, ‘You’re really short.'”

Seems like body shaming or something.

In the 70s they used to play that Randy Newman song on the radio all the time.

I'm short, so I think to myself, tell me something I don't already know. 🙄

But usually I say to anyone taller than I am, is that at one point, maybe only for a day, they were the same height I am. 🤭

I guess it's not really okay, and you probably wouldn't say it to a little person, but sometimes something is so shocking it just blurts right out of you. Here's a movie star you've been staring at for years and it turns out they're tiny. You simply can't stop yourself from saying it.

It's an odd thing to say to a stranger, but because people have preconceived notions of celebs and a preconceived idea of intimacy that isn't shared by said celeb, you end up with such situations...

I think it's more of an intimacy/closeness thing than anything to do with actual shortness. Like being overly familiar with someone you don't actually know at all.

Why would it not be ok to say?

reply

i wouldn't say inappropriate, but it's just a stupid thing to say.
