Billy Joel. Elton has better hits but also has some totally intolerably bad songs. A lot of them, in fact. Billy doesn't have the high points but he's more consistent in not being a total disappointment.

I'd give Billy Joel a slight edge.

Billy Joel. Better songs, and those songs are written by him rather than a writing partner.

I don't know who is better, but since I own a few Elton John albums and no Billy Joel albums, I'll vote for Elton John. They were in competition for most shows at Madison Square Garden. Billy Joel overtook Elton about five years ago.
