What's up with all these "vacation" ads?

It's only the first week of March and I've been seeing a lot of these here on MovieChat just within the past month. Ads for cruise ships, Disney resorts, Universal Orlando, hotels, etc.. Do they think the pandemic is over?

I do realize these companies have lost a lot of money this past year, but should they really be encouraging people to let their guard down? Or do they think enough people will be vaccinated in time for summer to be "business as usual"?

reply

Most people never realized there was a pandemic, only that some businesses weren't letting people work for some reason. I recall last year how on TV Disney was blasting their "We're open for you, it's safe, come get infected at Disney World, where we take every precaution to increase the spread of COVID-19."

I still don't understand why we didn't shut down all flights, regardless of mask wearing there is no safe way to vacation .

reply

Nobody can shut down all flights. They have lots of money.

reply

Unfortunately, that is how our government operates. The people vote, the corporations decide. It really is crazy that in the middle of a pandemic people are still traveling internationally.

reply

The U.S. is an oligarchy, not a democracy.

reply

Too true... an oligarchy of the rich elites.

As I've already mentioned on another one of your posts, cruise lines may be booking cruises, but nothing is going out of any ports right now except a very limited few in Europe and Asia - with all kinds of restrictions. Nobody knows when cruises will start back up and perhaps you should do some research on that before getting so upset.

reply

I remember your response. These ads I'm seeing are also for hotels and resorts, not just cruises.

Where in my post did I say I was "upset"? I just don't understand the carelessness mentality.

reply

But, it seems to bother you or you wouldn't have posted 2X about it.

I don't see any problem with people going to theme parks that are outdoors because they are reducing capacity and everyone is required to wear masks. I went to one myself in October and never felt in any danger - people were really spread out.

I wouldn't want to go to Universal right now because many of the attractions are inside, but that is my choice.

reply

I think people are getting to a point where they may not care. If I won an all inclusive vacation to Cancun, I'd take it.

reply

I guess I'm out of the loop. I haven't seen any vacation ads.

You can't blame folks for dreaming...

reply

Let’s go on a cruise !

reply

I wish I could - but until the CDC establishes safe protocols, cruises will not start in N America. It's getting to the point where very soon the cruise lines could begin test cruises sailing with only vaccinated passengers, but unless the CDC says, OK then nothing will happen.

"Encouraging people to let their guard down..."

I'm so sick of this. Who are you to judge? If done safely let people take a plane or stay in a hotel. It's been over a year of hell and things are finally opening up. Maybe people want to start thinking about doing something this summer and getting out of their holes. Biden has said everyone should have a vaccine by May.

BTW, "lost a lot of money" is the biggest understatement I've ever heard. I work in travel and let me tell you BILLIONS of dollars (some project over a trillion) lost, over a million jobs were lost, and thousands of companies closed. If some of these companies want to start trying to make dollar, I don't blame them one single bit.

reply

I agree - but there are people who think that nothing can open up until we have 0"" cases of Covid - which is never going to happen.

My husband and I have both received our 2nd Pfizer shot and while we will still wear masks where required, we fully intend to start living life a little more normally than we have this past year. There are a lot of people like us along with those who have had Covid and have some degree of immunity that can get out and start traveling again.

@ jekporkins:
If you want to risk traveling that's your choice. I want nothing to do with it.

I'm sick of people who squawk about their "freedoms being infringed upon" because they are being asked to take precautions to prevent the spread of a pandemic. Going to a bar or taking a trip is more important than stopping a virus. If they don't care about getting COVID... fine. Just don't infect others.

reply

You are entitled to your opinions and the only real problem I have with you is that you keep bringing up the ad's on TV for cruise travel - which has primarily been NCL.

Please stop making it sound like people are cruising right now from N America, because they're not.

reply

This has nothing to do with 'freedoms being infringed upon' stuff. Save that dreck for the Politics section.

My response has to do with your comment "but should they really be encouraging people to let their guard down? Or do they think enough people will be vaccinated in time for summer to be "business as usual"? That sounded extremely condescending, judgemental and flippant. Same as "Going to a bar or taking a trip is more important than stopping a virus."

I don't see the difference between squawking about "encouraging people to let their guard down" and the squawks about 'freedoms being infringed upon'? Both sound like opinionated rubbish trying to push your attitude on others.

I'm a guy in the middle that has been on lockdown and wants to travel safely. I'm sure every hotel and airplane are in the same boat. If you want nothing to do with it, fine. Sure sounds like you want to shove your opinion on others though.

reply

I didn't make up the "freedoms being infringed upon" line. I've heard this multiple times when they interview people on the news. Taking precautions during a pandemic is common sense, not politics. (BTW - I don't post on the Politics board. I don't even bother reading that garbage. I'm not affiliated with any political party.)

I don't see what was "condescending, judgmental and flippant" about the two points I made (you address these in your second paragraph). You underestimate the general public's lack of common sense. All it takes is for just one of these resorts to declare they have reopened. I'm sure they will initially reopen with restrictions but the public will fail to read the "restrictions" part, or think "that doesn't apply to me.". Watch the stampede begin.

I'm concerned about the direction society is headed. Instant gratification, hedonism, entitlement attitude, materialism... these are becoming increasingly prevalent. Empires have fallen in the past when these things are allowed to permeate their civilizations. I would hate to see this happen again.

There is no "safe" way for people to take a plane or stay in a hotel. For as much good as masks do us, they were never meant to replace self-isolating. The mask is a last ditch effort to slow the spread of the virus for after you've violated all the other ways of slowing the spread. Testing negative doesn't mean you don't catch it on the way to the airport, it also doesn't mean you don't have it (incubation takes time).

This stuff has been going on since near the start of the pandemic, too many corporations promising "safety" when there is none. Every person outside their own homes is a potential vector for transmission, you can still catch/spread the virus even if you're wearing 3 masks.

We never actually "shut down" sure small business got shut down, but big business paid their way to stay open this could have been over much sooner if people weren't so resistant to a stringent lockdown and shuttering all airports until it was over. Instead we congregated, flew all over the nation, and spread it as far as possible.

> do they think enough people will be vaccinated in time for summer to be "business as usual"?

Well, President Biden recently said that vaccine production had been accelerated to the point where every adult who wants it will be able to be vaccinated by the end of May. If that proves to be true, we might have something like business as usual, at least here in the USA.
