How many of us like to set our clocks a couple minutes fast so we won't be late for stuff?

Seems like a really silly thing to do, but I do it.

I'm always early for things so I don't. I just thought that if I knew the clock was fast, I would know what time it really was.

I did however set my ex husband's clock fast as he was always late. I think it's different if you don't know it's been set fast.

I used to, until I realized I was just having to make the mental corrections in my head and decided to opt for the simpler solution. Occam’s Razor. Similarly, I used to snooze my alarm clock, but don’t anymore. I just get up when the alarm goes off (if I actually sleep til it goes off...).

reply

Speaking of sleep, I haven't used an alarm clock in decades. I always seem to be awake when I need to be, whether I like it or not.

reply

i never used an alarm. i always woke up whenever i wanted. i can tell myself to wake up at 4am and i get up at 3:58. no matter what time or how many hours of sleep. i always had a knack to wake precisely when i wanted.

until i went to night work. now im totally screwed up.

reply

Night work is tough. I used to think I could adapt to anything but I've come to realize that I can't stay awake all night consistently, or the measures I might have to take (over caffeineation) might screw up how much sleep I might get during the day.
I have a lot of respect for people who do Night Work.

I like to be precise.

At the moment, your comment count is precisely sixty three thousand nine hundred and eighty-two.

it's the accountant thing.

in my car, yeah, i put the clock a couple minutes fast. but its really only for my lunch as i push the limit. i got it timed so as soon as it hits 12:30 it gives me just enough time to get in the building and clock in. im usually early for anything else.

reply

My current job isn't time sensitive but I still like to be on time. So many times I'm afraid I'm going to be late, from doing a couple extra things when I thought I was about to leave ... but so far, I'm never late. (Knock wood)

reply

I used to, then I started factoring in the difference so I don't bother anymore.

reply

Makes sense. I'm thinking about this myself.

reply

I'm annoyed that my cell phone clock is now 8 minutes fast and it really bugs me because I can't reset the clock on it. Any alarms I set I have to remember to set it for 8 minutes later than I want to be notified.

I always arrive a few minutes early (10-15 minutes) for things like doctor or dentist appointments. I think it's a courtesy, and sometimes you get in early and will be done earlier so what's not to like?

reply

The cell phone thing seems bizarre. I always look at my cell phone as being the absolute objective measure of what time it is.
If that's not accurate, I don't think I would have any faith in the rest of it.

reply

I hate being late. I don't recall ever being late to work, but can't swear that it's never happened.

reply

I'm the perfect employee ...
but did my employer see it that way?
Hell, I tried my best, but maybe there are better people out there, idk.

reply

I tried this a long time ago but it didn't work. I just ended up factoring in the difference. Like if I had my alarm clock set five minutes fast and wanted to wake at 6 AM, I'd sleep until it read 6:05.

Now I have a wristwatch that sets itself off the government atomic clock time signal, so I always know exactly what time it is. I like that much better.
