Does Anyone Else Listen To Mostly Sad Music?

For me, it's either it's sad, somber, melancholic, in a minor chord.. I can't think of too many happy songs I have in over 5,000 mp3s.

Sometimes singles (Billy Joel's "Pressure" as an example) are released in a major key as opposed to the album version in a minor key.

I also like dark stuff, and not necessarily diminished chords. Those Sabbath riffs, again, usually reverting to a half-step instead of the whole-step, Middle-Eastern vibe, ala The Doors and Pink Floyd.

I know David Gilmour said it's very hard to write a happy song. I love his "sad" guitar solos.

No but I can't leave a post about sad music unanswered... in case you are sad :)

When I'm sad a great sad song makes me feel better :)

Thanks

Oh no, not at all!

I mean I’m all for a slow, sad song when the mood strikes but I’m mostly about upbeat sounds.

That’s why I have no beef with pop music. It’s often written off as disposable, meaningless fluff but I heartily disagree with such a sentiment. I think there is an incredibly positive power in happy music that releases positive endorphins in your brain. A pop song can turn my mood from glum to cheery, get me motivated when I’m lethargic and put a smile on my face when life’s realities are getting me down.

Agreed👍

Sad songs are just happy songs played slowly.

reply

Na, if you play G and D, it doesn't matter what speed. Try it.

reply

I was being facetious, lol.

reply

It's hard to tell with text, but I can't think of any fast, sad songs.

reply

Listen to The Smiths then Bill, they specialised in that!

reply

I was thinking of it the other way around; take a happy fast song, slow it right down, sing it in a haunting, maudlin way and then start wondering why you don't get invited to parties anymore.

Mostly? No. Not even close, really.

Here is one I like, mostly because I am a Shirley Bassey fan

And because I am a Grateful Dead fan

One of my favorites groups is Duran Duran so I don’t only listen to sad music. My 2nd favorite is probably The Cure, so those themes to apply to a lot of their music.

More dark/depressing than sad for me: Black Sabbath, The Velvet Underground, Joy Division, early Smashing Pumpkins, and some lesser known bands. Stuff like that.

reply

I'm a huge Black Sabbath fan... Definitely not happy songs!

reply

I find Taylor Swift more depressing than them.

I have always liked dramatic and emotional music. Intelligent and meaningful lyrics are good too.

Quite often that comes with sad and/or dark themes. It doesn't always mean the music itself is sad though.

reply

Right, Led Zeppelin have some great songs with triumph.. Not happy, not sad. (I'm thinking of the riff after the drums stop in "When The Levee Breaks"

reply

Even "Paranoid" by Sabbath, the lyrics are filled with hopelessness but the music itself is upbeat, you jump around to it, I wouldn't call it depressing. Or "Breaking the law" by Judas Priest.

Then you have "Stairway to heaven" which has neutral lyrics but the music is melancholy/dream like.

I listen to a lot of ambient music that is pretty downbeat. Some of it borders on shoe-gaze altho I don't know enough about the genre to really comment on that much.

Have you listened to Dutch Treat - Tranquility? There's an entire album on YouTube.. Very good stuff. If you know other stuff like it, please reply with suggestions. Cheers and mellow on!
