I hate trains!

I despise trains almost as much as Aerosmith. There big, ugly, noisy and cause all sorts of traffic problems, which in turn hurts the economy and our way of life. I know they significantly contribute to the economy also, but they are just to problematic in the long run. I use to live in the city, but they created so much traffic chaos on a daily basis, and drove me nuts. So eventually I just said I had enough and moved away. Plus they are very dangerous to people and wildlife. I just seen video footage of a train barreling down the tracks running down a large herd of pronghorns. We have to figure out a way to use them differently or perhaps even get rid of trains altogether.

I used to live about 5 minutes away from train tracks. I hated having to wait 15 minutes for the train to pass by. I never understood how there wasn't a bridge for them to go over to begin with. The noise wasn't too much of a problem for me because we didn't live that close to them, but I can see how they would be an issue.

In 2018 36,560 people died in auto accidents, while in the same year 818 died due to train accidents in the US. They transport cargo cheaper than trucks. I know car traffic is many times more bothersome to me over trains as well. I wouldn’t want to get rid of either but autos seem to affect us more negatively.

The only thing I hate about them is that they're never on time (except in Switzerland!) I'd love to make a trip with the Orient Express some day.

reply

In Japan they're pretty on time.

reply

is that still around?

reply

Not the original one. But you can still travel the route by other trains:

london to istanbul would be nice trip. i guess it would take a week with the stops.

Hurts the economy and our way of life?!

When you have thousands of motorists stopped, especially for prolonged periods, you bet it hurts the economy. As well it adds to increased air pollution with all those idling vehicles and it just inconveniences thousands. After you work a long day like 12 hours or better, you want to get home afterwards to get as much rest as possible before another long day of work starts. As well as see your family. But, you could be delayed for a whole hour or more sometimes, just because of a train. You don't think that would be a major piss off to deal with on an ongoing basis?

reply

You're doing it wrong, we're supposed to be ON the train , not all dragging our own 2 ton steel box around with us that
A) makes the space you take up go from 1sq foot to 60 - no wonder we have congestion
b) uses far far more fossil fuel to push it around, per person , than a train does.

reply

Are you serious with this? Stops traffic, LOL?!

reply

Something I didn't mention in my first post, was my grandfather was killed in a train vehicle accident. This was long before I came along. I don't know the details about what happened.

reply

So the Russians would have you believe.

How do trains cause all sorts of traffic problems and especially in cities create such traffic chaos?
Obviously they can be dangerous, but I don’t see how they are very dangerous to people in normal situations.
That’s horrible about the pronghorns!

I guess trains are different in different countries?!

Have you never been forced to have to wait for a train to get off the road before you could proceed? In Calgary, it's been an issue for years. You can literally end up Trapped in the south east industrial park by trains blocking roads. It sucks! Many people have been hurt by trains as well. Usually c-trains though.

reply

Definitely not, no! Nothing like that here.

reply

Trains are key to the economy of Canada. They are not going anywhere.
