You ever accidentally call a black guy “bro” or “brutha” in a friendly way?

I use those terms all the time when talking to my friends and white strangers, every once in a while I let it slip when talking to a black guy and instantly feel stupid. It’s never been awkward but I’m sure they notice it.

reply

I don’t think there’s anything wrong bro or brotha.

Sup brah?

reply

Quite frequently, almost daily I do
Never had an issue

reply

Yeah I mean like I said it’s all context and tone based so it’s never been taken the wrong way but it doesn’t stop me from feeling weird every time I do it lol. Probably a reflection of the current climate.

reply

No.

reply

I wouldn’t call anyone “brutha” except my brother but I have often called guys of all races bro. It wasn’t ever accidental though.

reply

I call men brotha occasionally. Never felt awkward saying it to a black friend or stranger.

reply

No.Are bro and brutha considered racially offensive. They seem like friendly terms to me.

reply

Is anything not offensive in some manner these days? I probably just pissed off all eskimos everywhere somehow with what I typed in the first sentence.

reply

What country do you live in? In the US the words bro, brotha, boy, son etc all have a history of being used as racial epithets.

reply

News to me.Bro and Brotha sound as innocent and friendly as pal or buddy.I personally don't read anything racist into them. And boy and son are perfectly fine for referencing someone much younger than yourself regardless of race.

reply

Not in the US, esp now racial tensions are the highest they’ve been since the 60s.

An Epitaph is an assemblage of words to honor a deceased person.
An Epithet is an ill-intentioned word directed at some person.
Easy to mistake one for the other, but they are very different in meaning.

reply

Autocorrect lol, I typed epithets
