Your 5 best 80's pop songs?

Best decade of music and movies...

And I know some of these may be more new wave then pop, but if they were on the Billboard Top 100 they count, m'kay?

My list certainly changes over the years, but in my current mood I'd say:

1. Broken Wings by Mr.Mister
2. Self Control by Laura Branigan
3. Something About You by Level 42
4. Too Shy by Kajagoogoo
5. Our House by Madness

reply

How can many of you not include Michael Jackson? MJ was the 80s!

reply

I was just thinking that. I can do Michael Jackson only here...

1. Billie Jean
2. Thriller
3. Bad
4. Beat It
5. P.Y.T.

reply

Never heard P.Y.T.

The movie Macgruber had the best of Broken Wings in cinema.

I don't listen to this type of music much anymore, but I'll go through my nostalgia memory banks and put out ones I remember liking as a kid. (They'll be 80's songs, but maybe not released as singles I guess). Not in any order.

1. Home by the Sea - Genesis
2. True Faith - New Order
3. Somebody's Watching Me - Rockwell
4. Hungry Like The Wolf - Duran Duran
5. Beat It - Michael Jackson

Since those are all guys, and I'm a modern type person who believes in equal representation, here are 5 from the women of that time

1. Eternal Flame - the Bangles
2. The Warrior - Scandal
3. Time After Time - Cindi Lauper
4. Self Control - Laura Branigan
5. 99 Red Balloons - Nena

Unfortunately, I don't have five that were made by the transgender, non-binary, or other category (I can't keep track anymore). Except maybe Karma Chameleon by Boy George would go here.

reply

Bronski Beat, Marilyn, Dead Or Alive and Divine could join Boy George (Culture Club). 🌈

reply

Can I say your women's list is freakin' perfect?

reply

Thanks. I seem to remember all of those songs having a really catchy or beautiful melody.

reply

Love these.

We've nailed a lot... Good to see Broken Wings and Kajagoogoo get some respect!

A few more pop hits that I didn't notice yet:

1. The Safety Dance - Men Without Hats
2. Karma Chameleon - Culture Club
3. Don't You Want Me - The Human League
4. All Night Long - Lionel Ritchie
5. Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go - Wham!

reply

Love these.

There's so many that come to mind when you really think about it. There's always Land Down Under, or stuff by Pat Benetar or Joan Jett. It kind of depends on where you draw the line between rock and pop. I saw that NotoriousRio put The Number of the Beast on his list, and if that's the case, I could put up Iron Maiden songs all day long!

reply

As I said right at the start of the thread, I could easily to a top 1000 (or a top 100 for each year). Then there’s album tracks, b-sides, where do you draw the line?

Pre computer days, I used to write lists of songs, albums, bands and in the end I had to throw it all away because it was taking over my life.

When I retire, I’ll fill my days cataloging my collection. Currently, the only list I have is my ‘want list’ of albums, which is huge.

I didn't even notice the topic said pop, but I don't care, if a song was a hit in the top 40 that's good enough for me! 😉

reply

They are too many of them , I am thinking now about:
-You are in the army now
- Wonderful life (black)
- Like a prayer
- Beat it
-The riddle

reply
