Your 5 best 80's pop songs?

Best decade of music and movies...

And I know some of these may be more new wave then pop, but if they were on the Billboard Top 100 they count, m'kay?

My list certainly changes over the years, but in my current mood I'd say:

1. Broken Wings by Mr.Mister
2. Self Control by Laura Branigan
3. Something About You by Level 42
4. Too Shy by Kajagoogoo
5. Our House by Madness

There's no way I can pick any definitive list, as there are just too damn many good songs from back then, and if I tried to make another one in 10 minutes, it'd turn out completely different; still, in no particular order...

In Between Days - The Cure
Take On Me - A-ha
True Faith - New Order
Enola Gay - OMD
A Matter of Feeling - Duran Duran

Love these.

"and if I tried to make another one in 10 minutes, it'd turn out completely different"

This. Also, good list.

Well, I think I have to exclude anything by Michael Jackson. Or I would just fill my list with five of his songs.

Here's my list though:
1: "Karma Chameleon" - Culture Club
2: "Got to get" - Rob 'n' Raz & Leila K
3: "Just can't get enough" - Depeche Mode
4: "Like a virgin" - Madonna
5: "There must be an angel" - Eurhytmics

Love these.

I can't do it - I could easily compile a top 1000! Leaving my Heavy Rock leanings aside, here's 5 from 1980: -

ELO - All Over The World
Genesis - Turn It On Again
Korgis - Everybodys Got To Learn Sometimes
Paul McCartney - Coming Up
Police - Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic

These are all excellent. It is hard to leave out the rock/metal since I too was mostly in that camp.
I read your list (and others) and I remember other songs I wish I'd included. Too many.

reply

And this is my top 5 for just one year, never mind the whole decade, lol.

reply

1980. 😎

A Top 5 post year by year would be cool!

Here's my top 313 (I created this playlist when I had a Tidal account)

The first 4 I love, the last one I’ve not heard of.

if you have any kind of fondness for melodic power pop along the lines of the dBs, big star, badfinger, you might really dig marshall crenshaw's debut album. just about every song on that record is a little gem.

you probably have heard 'someday, someway' at some point - it was a mid-sized hit, at least in the u.s., and still pops up every now & then.

he never made an album half as good after that, but all of his records have at least a song or two that gives me pure pop bliss.

God I really want to contribute to this thread but there is absolutely no way I could narrow it down to just 5 songs. There are at least 100 that I rate equally.

I have an Ultimate 80s playlist I made on Spotify, for anyone who’s interested:

I counted 25 that I don’t physically own, of which maybe 10 I didn’t know.
