Am I the only one who thinks Scarface kind of sucks?

Never mind that it has been hijacked and cheapened by hip hop culture, the quality of the movie itself just isn’t that good. I used to love it, now I look back and realize how cheesy it is.

Having said that, the botched drug deal scene w the chainsaw is AWESOME and one of the most intense scenes put to film. The rest is so over the top and silly it’s almost unwatchable. Pacino’s accent is awful and I highly doubt there was ever a Cuban drug lord like that.

Sucks? No. Acquired taste? Definitely.

I think Pacino's voice is a little too labored, and I figure he's meant to be a younger man given his young sister and the fact that the lady cast as his mother was only a few years older than Pacino.

I still rate it as enjoyable given how unique it is. Even though you know he's going to die at the end, you always want him to win one last time.

Acquired taste?

Yes, although being a moderate box office success upon release, it divided critics with some like Leonard Maltin giving it 1.5 stars.

But when it made it onto VHS it started to get good rewatch value. The DVD release put it over the top and it had a resurgence in the early 2000s.

Like a fine wine, it took time to be appreciated fully. That's an acquired taste if there ever was one. Needed to age 2 decades to be fully appreciated.

It's interesting. I loved it when I was a kid. Then I thought it was a joke for 20 years. But I watched it a few weeks ago and thought it was brilliant again. Maybe it depends where you're at in life.

I’ll try again

What struck me this time was all the parallels the film shares with Shakespearean tragedy. I viewed it more a parable, a play, than a grounded real life story.

reply

Yeah I can see that. I do like the music.
