Am I the only one who thinks Scarface kind of sucks?

Never mind that it has been hijacked and cheapened by hip hop culture, the quality of the movie itself just isn’t that good. I used to love it, now I look back and realize how cheesy it is.

Having said that, the botched drug deal scene w the chainsaw is AWESOME and one of the most intense scenes put to film. The rest is so over the top and silly it’s almost unwatchable. Pacino’s accent is awful and I highly doubt there was ever a Cuban drug lord like that.

I still love that movie and still feel bad for Manny😢

reply

Ya he was just tryin to give his buddy’s sister some good pipe 😂

reply

Tony did seem to have a very creepy interest in what Gina was up to

reply

I still like it.

reply

I like them both.

I think it's pretty good. Watched it multiple times, but probably been at least 10 years since I've seen it. Anyway, I've always enjoyed it, but it's certainly overrated imo.

The scenes when his sister are mentioned are just hilarious with the music and Pacino's smug face.

reply

The first time I saw it I liked it. But now I wouldn't watch it if you paid me?

reply

Exactly

De Palma sucks. He has talent and is inspired enough to do iconic scenes very well. But that's it. Once he films his pet scenes he proceeds to coast in the glow for the rest of the movie. Wow's you then goes to his trailer for a month while the film makes itself.

His movies are classic examples of "I loved it when I first saw it as a kid." Every one of his movies I rewatch suffers greatly.

I remembered thinking Scarface was a 9/10 movie. I now give it a 5/10. Same with Mission Impossible 1, etc.

reply

Yup

reply

Still great.

reply

It never was

reply

Was and is. Sorry but you're wrong.

reply

Seeing that I'm a die hard Scarface fan, I struggle to even respond to this. I think the film is a masterpiece.

reply

Interesting

reply

Indeed.

Here's how I'd put it. Yes, the movie may be cheesy in some aspects. It is perhaps one of those style over substance scenarios. I think the film has an overwhelming amount of style.

reply

I like the chainsaw scene, that was well done. I’m not sure I see how it has style outside of that?

reply

I guess it's just a matter of opinion and perception. There's a lot of movies people love that I don't. Movies are art. Art is subjective.
