Good movies with bad titles.

Inglourious Basterds
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Edge of Tomorrow
Precious: Based on the Novel "Push" by Sapphire
The Shawshank Redemption

reply

I don't think Edge of Tomorrow and Shawshank are bad titles.

Always thought The Empire Strikes Back sounded kind of wonky.

You messed up though cause you said good movies and then have Inglorious Basterds listed! Just joking, I just couldn't get into that one.

reply

Remember the title is a homage to Inglorious Bastards (1978), an Italian film directed by Enzo G. Castellari.

Edge of Tomorrow just doesn't sound like a sci-fi action movie. It sounds like some teen movie about some girl struggling with high school. Shawshank is just a strange word and adding "redemption" kind of spoils the ending.

I actually think Star Wars is a strange title. It's more like Space Wars.

reply

I was going to mention Star Wars it sounds really generic but I guess a product of it's time. I don't think that title would fly now.

reply

I couldn't get into Basterds either! There were some great scenes wrapped into a nothing story to me. To each their own.

reply

Minority Report. No one even knows what that means.

reply

Isn't that what you do when you call the authorities on an illegal immigrant?

reply

Hahahahahaha!!!

reply

Oddly enough, I thought it was something along those lines when I first heard of it and it sounded like it would be something completely uninteresting. Luckily, a friend told me to watch it and I totally loved it!

reply

The term is explained in the movie and its original source material.

reply

It is, but you have to watch the movie or know the source material (or be familiar with the term). My point is the title gives absolutely no clue as to what the movie is even about, thus limiting interest.

reply

I disagree that a movie's premise should be conveyed in the title. Demanding that is a symptom of having lived a life being spoon-fed mass marketed media.

reply

Look, all I'm saying is it's a bad title and I'm sticking to it.

reply

Yes, the direction of information flow is wrong.

reply

I still don't know what that means.

reply

Those titles aren't bad, IMO, except maybe Precious.

I especially like Inglorious Bastards. It's a good description of the guys in the movie.

reply

Agreed. And 'Inglorious Bastards' was a really good title.

reply

The title is bad because of the ridiculous spelling.

reply

Attack of the Clones (the worst Star Wars title ever)
Quantum of Solace (WTF does that mean - I had to break it down to decipher it)
Octopussy (I remember back when this came out people laughed hard)
Fan4tastic (ugg, should probably put 2 Fast 2 Furious here too)
We Bought a Zoo (Damon got wrecked for this one)

reply

Fant4stic is a bad title, but the movie is even worse so it fits. This thread is about good movies with bad titles.

reply

"GOOD" movies.

reply

I don't know why so many people hate the title "We Bought a Zoo." It is what it's about. Maybe too obvious though.

reply

"We Blew Up the Death Star"
"We Fight Ghosts"
"I Found The Ark of The Covenant"

Actually, that's pretty funny.

reply

'Honey, I Shrink the Kids' was pretty good for a family movie title.

reply

Good entries, particularly your first two.

reply

Those movies are all famously dogshit

reply

Ninja Scroll - the word "ninja" never inspires confidence. This is one of the few animes that I really love. Stupid title.

reply

I haven't seen that movie since I was a kid.

reply

Avengers: Endgame

reply

Even Infinity War is pretty dumb.

reply

I like the title Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. I think it fits the movie perfectly.

I would add A Clockwork Orange. If you haven't read the book, the title has no context.

reply

I think The Spotless Mind sounds better and sounds less of a turnoff for people.

reply

It's one of the most pretentious titles in movie history. It fits the movie, though.

reply

the Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is a superb, poetic turn of phrase.

if you don't see the wicked beauty of that, you have my sympathy.

reply

I think you are replying to the wrong person. I like the title.

reply

i wasn't really replying to you, so much as expanding on your comment.

Sweetheart (2019)

A pretty good low budget horror movie.

The name is 95 percent irrelevant.

I gave it a 9/10 on IMDb.
