What did you watch this week moviechatters? (19/07-25/07)

Hey guy's, I like the action this thread's getting lately. Rate my movie, I rate yours. That's how the game goes.

My week:

Marked for death (1990 TV): I’m not even sure if I saw it back then but I now declare that this is my 2nd favorite Seagal movie. It’s beautifully bombastic and I enjoyed every second of it. There’s a scene in a club where this amazing reggae singer (Jimmy Cliff) is on stage singing the movie’s song as it unfolds before our eyes. I and I, rate this blood clawt of a flick 7.5/10.

Air Force one (1997 TV): This movie should be called: Mr Marshall AKA « the greatest president ever ». He’s like a mix between Rambo and Michelle Obama. He’s a war Vet, he has a quick wit, perfect timing, charisma, he can talk, he can shoot, he can get body slammed and get right back up and he can fly a frickin’ plane during warfare!! Plus he’s a family man. What more do you want? As for the movie; it’s one of the great 90’s action flick and that last 20 minutes of airborne action was groundbreaking back then and still pretty intense in 2020. My rating: 7.5/10

Ali (2001 TV): Here is a little story for you guys;
When I was a teenager I saw The hurricane (1999) at the theatre and came out of the movie a changed young little man I decided to find myself a biography to read at the library so that I could also have a hero. I went to the clerk and asked if there was any biography about great boxers and she referred me to Muhammad Ali. It worked. I read the book and became fascinated with the man. He was a my hero, amongst others. It’s the first time for me to see the film because somehow I felt it could never be good enough for my expectations. And although I watched many Michael Mann’s movies and I saw most of Will Smith’s, I still stayed away from the film. I think A part of me didn’t really want to see this actor I like play that role. Maybe I would’ve been more tempted if he was played by someone I don’t know. Indeed, although Smith played the role very well, I was often taken out of the movie because I did not see Ali, I saw Smith.Otherwise I can’t really say anything bad about the movie, I like how it starts with Liston’s fight and just sails on smoothly from there to the Foreman fight. My rating: 7/10

After some internal debate, I will risk looking like a total dumbass.
Since I don't subscribe to any streaming services and have cut my cable bill to the bare minimum, I have extremely few options for televised entertainment.
To my complete surprise I have found my weekday evenings devoted to COMET TV. At six o'clock comes on the amiable and rather sensitive Quantum Leap for two hour-long eps. I do break for Jeopardy at 7 and then watch some Big Bang while flipping back to Quantum during commercials and stick with whatever seems better until the next commercial.
Then at 8:00 it's the interesting if often puzzling Battlestar Galactica for two hours. I'm usually dinking around on the computer so it doesn't get my full attention, but at times it's rather compelling.
And at 10:00, onto the easy to digest Stargate SG1. Just interesting enough to justify watching, although ... idk. The situations never seem that dire and the solutions often come out of nowhere or are simply very predictable. Pleasant cast, however. I'll watch that until Colbert comes on unless I fall asleep first, which happens often.

Haha, hey that’s cool. We should all give a play by play detail like that. Rock on!

Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines (2003) - I knew it would be bad. I hated the Kate Brewster character. The action scene with the fire truck was fine. 6/10

Regarding Henry (1991) - I assume this was suppose to be Oscar bait for Ford. The movie just wasn't deep enough and then there was that happy ever after ending 6/10

A Most Violent Year (2014) - I was expecting some major mob violence in this. Instead it's a heavy on the dialogue drama with some good performances. 7/10

A Taste of Honey (1961) - A very good look at teenage pregnancy, poverty and dysfunctional families. A very sad but well done drama. I loved the guy who played the mother's husband, Peter. 7.5/10

All My Sons (1948) - a gem of a film noir with another fine performance from Edward G Robinson. A young Burt Lancaster is also in this one. On of those post WW2 adjustment movies mixed with a family business drama. 7.5/10

Fighting with My Family ...(2019)...9/10 Very unique, very interesting, and based on a true story.
A former wrestler and his family make a living performing at small venues around the country while his kids dream of joining World Wrestling Entertainment.

Come to Daddy (2019) 6/10
A man in his thirties travels to a remote cabin to reconnect with his estranged father...Stars: Elijah Wood..Dark well done. Just not my usual type of movie.

Eli (2019)...7/10
A boy receiving treatment for his auto-immune disorder discovers that the house he's living in isn't as safe as he thought. Well done copy of another famous movie but I liked it.

One For the Money 2012 I liked the book and I liked the movie... 8/10
Unemployed and newly-divorced Stephanie Plum lands a job at her cousin's bail-bond business, where her first assignment puts her on the trail of a wanted local cop from her romantic past.

Ghost Light (2018) 6 out 10
A dark comedy about a disgruntled summer-stock actor who contemptuously disregards the superstition surrounding Shakespeare's tragedy, Macbeth. By doing so he unleashes the curse of The Scottish Play and wreaks havoc on the company.

All of Me 1984 Steve Martin..Still Funny..8/10 A dying millionaire has her soul transferred into a younger, willing woman. However, something goes wrong, and she finds herself in her lawyer's body..

I can't remember what all I've watched lately, but at the moment I'm watching The Commish. I missed it during it's original run, but I guess I'd give it a 7/10. Some parts are lame, but others are pretty good.

I'm sure I've watched more, but I can't remember them right now.

C’mon now, I know you can do better than that!

The only one of yours I've seen is Air Force One. It was years ago. I thought it was decent movie. I'd give it a 7/10.

I watched The Suspicions of Mr Whicher, 4 episodes, 2011-2014 (UK). I found them engrossing. Mr Whicher is an ex-Scotland Yard detective who, after leaving Scotland Yard, becomes a private detective in the 1860s. The first episode is based on an actual case, but the remaining three are fictional. I thought it was well done. It's a bit of a lesson in how crimes were solved before modern investigative techniques such as finger prints, and certainly DNA analysis. 8/10

An Inspector Calls (2015 UK) - The story focuses on a mysterious police inspector who investigates the Birling family and their dinner guest following the suicide of a young woman. It is set in 1912 when the family is holding a dinner party to celebrate the engagement of their daughter. The inspector's interrogations of each member of the dinner party make it clear that all of them have contributed to her death through individually selfish or exploitative behavior. 8/10

Now that’s better. Looks interesting.

The Lighthouse: Very strange.

I See You: Decent mystery.

😎

reply

Strange indeed. I was somewhat captivated by the dialogue though. 6.5/10

6.8/10. Did you think Dafoe was chewing the scenery just a bit, and did the film seem a bit pretentious?

😎

reply

A bit pretentious for sure.

I don’t know what you mean about chewing scenery.

reply

Did you watch The Lighthouse, bro?

😎

reply

Yes, I just never heard the expression

reply

Okay then. It's an old one meaning to overact, bro.

😎

reply

Well, one thing that surprised me is I bought this movie thinking he would be the star but Robert P shone way brighter.

reply

He chewed the scenery less.
