What did you watch this week moviechatters? (19/07-25/07)

Hey guy's, I like the action this thread's getting lately. Rate my movie, I rate yours. That's how the game goes.

My week:

Marked for death (1990 TV): I’m not even sure if I saw it back then but I now declare that this is my 2nd favorite Seagal movie. It’s beautifully bombastic and I enjoyed every second of it. There’s a scene in a club where this amazing reggae singer (Jimmy Cliff) is on stage singing the movie’s song as it unfolds before our eyes. I and I, rate this blood clawt of a flick 7.5/10.

Air Force one (1997 TV): This movie should be called: Mr Marshall AKA « the greatest president ever ». He’s like a mix between Rambo and Michelle Obama. He’s a war Vet, he has a quick wit, perfect timing, charisma, he can talk, he can shoot, he can get body slammed and get right back up and he can fly a frickin’ plane during warfare!! Plus he’s a family man. What more do you want? As for the movie; it’s one of the great 90’s action flick and that last 20 minutes of airborne action was groundbreaking back then and still pretty intense in 2020. My rating: 7.5/10

Ali (2001 TV): Here is a little story for you guys;
When I was a teenager I saw The hurricane (1999) at the theatre and came out of the movie a changed young little man I decided to find myself a biography to read at the library so that I could also have a hero. I went to the clerk and asked if there was any biography about great boxers and she referred me to Muhammad Ali. It worked. I read the book and became fascinated with the man. He was a my hero, amongst others. It’s the first time for me to see the film because somehow I felt it could never be good enough for my expectations. And although I watched many Michael Mann’s movies and I saw most of Will Smith’s, I still stayed away from the film. I think A part of me didn’t really want to see this actor I like play that role. Maybe I would’ve been more tempted if he was played by someone I don’t know. Indeed, although Smith played the role very well, I was often taken out of the movie because I did not see Ali, I saw Smith.Otherwise I can’t really say anything bad about the movie, I like how it starts with Liston’s fight and just sails on smoothly from there to the Foreman fight. My rating: 7/10

Just one movie this week.

Child's Play (1988, US)
Watched this one due to your recommendation. I can definitely tell that it would have been more effective if I'd seen it for the first time as a kid, but I really enjoyed it anyway. Some scenes were pretty creepy too, like when the mom was trying to figure out whether what the kid was saying about Chucky was true. That part where his head suddenly spun around and he was like "I'm Chucky, wanna play?" made me jump out of my skin lol. Anyway good movie, 7/10.

The only one of your movies I've seen is Air Force One. Hated it. It's one of the movies where I root for the "bad guys".

reply

Im glad you managed to see the qualities within the film.

As for AF1, how could you be against Rambo and Obama's son?? You evil? ;p

reply

It's more that I sympathized with the antagonists. :) I do that in any movie where leftists are portrayed as villains. Had the antagonists been Nazis or something, I would have viewed the politics of the movie differently, though I would still think that making a US president an action star would be fundamentally silly.

Although I will say this: I did think it was hilarious when Donald Trump said he loved the movie because Harrison Ford "stood up for America", and Ford responded like "it's just a film dude".

reply

I see what you mean.

"making a US president an action star would be fundamentally silly." And fun!!

good day, sk.

i haven't seen air force one since it was released, but i remember it being a very fun film. if it ever pops up in the streaming world, i'd happily watch it again.

my week:

certified copy (2010) 5 my first re-watch, i believe.

i admire it as an incomplete puzzle movie, where the pieces clearly don't fit together and moments can't be reconciled.

the sweet hereafter (1997) 2.5 i know this is revered.
i didn't like it much. there was far too much ethereal music and sarah polley reciting annoying poetry.

wish upon (2017) 3.5 this isn't so bad it's good.
it's so unbelievably terrible that it's fantastic.

'you dig on multiverse?'

haha X 10 billion.

the blackcoat's daughter (2015) 3.5 weird thing: i've now watched this 4 times, yet i remembered almost nothing about what happens at any point in the film. my fourth watch was full of surprises & shocks.

some of that is almost certainly my middle aged memory (was never that great tbh), but i think a lot of it can be laid at the feet of how much this movie gets by on atmosphere.

not a criticism. i'll take atmosphere over plot any day.

this movie has nicely slid into my rotation of films that i enjoy revisiting every 6-12 months, and i think i'll likely watch it many, many more times in the years to come.

son of rambow (2007) 3.5 you'd think a film that seems like a cross between sing street & hunt for the wilderpeople with guerilla film-making thrown in would be made just for me. but i only found it amusing. and amusing is fine. but i wanted to love it, not find it pleasant and quaint.

applesauce (2015) 3.5 i can't imagine tukel is any less obnoxious and annoying in real life than he is in his movies.

makes me laugh though.

leaving las vegas (2015) 3.5 i avoided this for years, under the assumption it was a glossy awards baity hollywood take on alcoholism.

it is definitely not that. and i mostly really liked it, particularly its lo-fi indie feel. the smooth jazz soundtrack got on my nerves bit, though.

inferno (1980) 2.5 every year or so i take another crack at this, in the hope that this will be the time i don't find it incredibly boring.

same result.

suspiria and tenebre are a/a+ movies in my books. not this one.

mona lisa (1986) 2 hard for me to respect a movie that makes me listen to phil collins unironically.

people like this, i guess. i found it glossy & bland & toothless, completely lacking in any bite whatsoever. not so different than that phil collins' track they willingly put on the soundtrack.

no film with phil collins on the soundtrack has soul.

tenebre (1982) 4 re-watch makes me reconsider whether this is actually my favourite argento.

i think my preference has switched back to suspiria, because weirdness always wins with me. but i'd say this is probably his 'conventionally' best work. it almost makes sense, almost has characters, etc...

i'd also say it's probably his best looking cast.

impetigore (2019) 3.5 lots to like in this. very cool style, starts off with a bang, has an intriguing setup and lots of interesting little twists and turns.

but it lost me in some muddled plot in the last 1/2 hr and 'how on earth did she know that?' moments. not that these were show stoppers, but it kinda diminished a film that i had been thoroughly enjoying.

and it also has one extremely shoddy moment that looks like it could have come out of an ed wood film, which is a real puzzlement considering how sharp and mostly professional the rest of the film is.

absolutely worth a watch, but it feels like if it had been tightened up a little bit it had potential for greatness.

satan's slaves (2017) 3 re-watch after quite enjoying the director's new-ish film on shudder last night.

my response hasn't really shifted from my first viewing. some good qualities, very professional looking, but rather long & a bit too heavy on those jump moments.

triangle (2009) 3.5 i have a very good time whenever i give this a go. i even like the fact it looks so weirdly cheap in places.

danton (1983) 3.5 french revolution historical drama/comedy (maybe?) i know nothing nothing about anything. anything includes the french revolution.

though i do have a vague understanding that robespierre was bad.

but i liked this quite a bit. full of sweaty men and flamboyant dialogue, extravagant costumes and sets.

i was not bored, and that's what i ask for.

funny games (2007) 4 i think the performances here - especially roth & pitt - make this a smidgen more enjoyable than the orginal for me.

i love both films. they really push the envelope.

beyond the darkness (1979) 3.5 13 minutes in, i see something i've only seen in one other movie, and i never, ever expected to see it again. dang. i didn't really want to see that, but...i have to admit, this movie has already earned my respect.

the maid's table manners are repugnant.

this is an absolutely blast. silly, gross, lots of gore, foxy eurotrash women. cool score.

reply

I really liked The Sweet Hereafter. I know I'm a sucker for "art films" but this was a good 'un.

reply

i've enjoyed other egoyan films (the adjuster, exotica), but i found myself unable to get on this one's wavelength. my loss!

reply

That's a nice mix of movies, again.

Sweet hereafter: 7/10
Leaving las vegas: 9/10
the blackcoat's daughter: i guess i'll have to watch that someday.
Son of rambow looks kinda funny.
Funny games I saw the start but never got to see the rest, yet.

Greetings Stonekeeper!
It’s great these threads are getting so much participation.

Air Force One - i haven’t seen this one since it came out so I’ll go with your 7.5 : Get off my plane!

My week:

Targets (1968)
Crazy film about a deranged Vietnam vet on a shooting rampage and who can try to stop him? None other than an elderly Boris Karloff. Several scenes in this one gave me a Tarantino vibe. Good movie.

Night Wing (1979)
Animals and then people are turning up dead in the desert with razor like wounds and a smell of ammonia. A tribal cop and a scientist have to get to the bottom of it. This one really followed the Jaws formula common in late 70’s animal vs man films. I saw this one many times as a kid. Fun 70’s horror.

Buffalo 66 (1998)
Dude gets out of prison and kidnaps a girl to bring to his parents house to visit, and that’s just the beginning. Great song routine by Ben Gazza. I watched this twice this week. If anyone hasn’t seen this yet, stop what your doing and find it now. Highly recommended.

The Family (1970)
I read about this Charles Bronson flick and I could only find it on EBay in VHS format because of its obscurity. Bronson is a hit man looking for revenge against a crime boss. Lots of car chases and many cool scenes in 70’s New Orleans. Costarring: Telly Savalas and Jill Ireland. I really enjoyed this one and am so glad I ordered it. Bronson fans will love it.

reply

Cool picks man! Buffalo 66 is on my list.

reply

What are you planning on watching this week?

reply

I got Maximum risk, Molly's game, the lodge, ford vs ferrari, amongst others

reply

Maximum Risk sounds potentially interesting. I have been considering The Lodge and intend to watch Ford vs Ferrari sometime in the near future. Molly's Game doesn't really interest me. This week, I've already watched The Assistant, Reform School Girls, Hard Ticket to Hawaii, Never Rarely Sometimes Always, and Emma. I'm considering Different Flowers, Philadelphia, Greyhound, Double Face, Erik the Conqueror, Session 9, Ringu, Warcraft, Richard Jewell, Dreamcatcher, Fatso, Murders in the Zoo, Portrait of a Lady on Fire, and Banana Split. I won't be able to watch all of those, but maybe we will end up matching on something.

reply

Rugrats Movie lol

reply

I'll watch it with my kids someday. I enjoyed it when I was a kid so they will too. They don't have the choice.

reply

i watch it with my little brother and sister a couple times already they love it

reply

Just one movie this week.

I have a interest in social science, so I decided to watch one of the most successful social engineering movies of all time.

Reefer Madness (1936)

This movie was probably the most significant reason as to why marijuana (so new it was spelled with a 'h' in this movie) was classified as a illegal drug.

The movie exaggerates the effects of the drug (like if it was laced with high grade crack) but the story does ring true of the corrosive effects that drug use can have on society.

The film is 84 years old, it is interesting to see how standard life of the young was during this time. Suprising sexuality in this, the film does a great job of scaring moviegoers (parents) about this new drug.

Rating - Swell

reply

Yeah, I saw bits and parts of this one. Looked kinda funny

reply

I watched the series The Spanish princess since I’m crazy about the Tudors, that royal family is fascinating, I’m not a historian geek but the Tudors do fascinate me.

So I watched that show which is about Henry VIII first wife Catherine of Aragon. How she came to England and married first Henry’s brother Arthur.

The good parts
The actress playing Catherine of Aragon she was really good and it’s nice they finally cast an actress who did look like Catherine of Aragon well sort of.

The bad side is completely historically inaccurate in the sense that they made. Big fuss on Catherine marrying Henry it’s clear they made that just for on screen drama.

The scandal of Catherine being virgin or not when she married Henry came till he wanted to divorce her. If I’m not mistaken Henry’s first marriage Came very smoothly and the show made it like a very complicated issue.

So it’s clear the marriage drama they got that from the series Reign. Another thing so over the top almost cringe worthy was making Margaret the Queen grandmother going power nuts just like they did Catherine deMedici on the show reign.

Now I understand the show was based on a novel by Philipa Gregory who writes a lot inaccurate Tudors stuff but this was tv drama at its highest. I watched the other Boleyn girl with Natalie Portman and Scarlet Johansson also based on a novel by the same writer and didn’t feel that inaccurate even though it was.

It was more Much believable than this, they made everything more credible in that film. I know the movie invented The king had a romance with Mary Boleyn and then felt for his sister but still the film felt much more credible than this show.

Air Force One was unrealistic but entertaining 7/10
