Who is the best movie director of all time?

I would say Alfred Hitchcock.

reply

Martin Scorsese.

reply

Which is your favorite movie out of his filmography?
Mine is The Departed.

reply

Departed is my favourite. Cape fear close second.

reply

In no particular order

Taxi Driver
The Departed
Hugo
The Gangs of New York
The Wolf of Wall Street
The Aviator

I couldn't pick just one.

reply

I love all of those except Hugo, never finished it, will probably give it another try one of these days.
Thanks for sharing.

reply

I saw Hugo in the theater and really liked it. Not sure it'll look so great on the home screen, but if people relax and get into it's rhythm, it's a pleasant and satisfying effort that eschews the rock 'em-sock 'em aspects of most movies these days. An homage to film history as well, but I'm not sure many appreciate it.

reply

He doesn't get enough credit for the Cape Fear remake.

reply

Probably Taxi Driver for me.

reply

I agree, Martin Scorsese.

reply

Vittorio de sica

reply

I'll be watching Bicycle Thieves tonight, thanks.

reply

Did you like it?

reply

Hi, yes, I liked it. Thank you for recommending De Sica.

The ending provided a great lesson but at the same time sucked because they didn't get 'the' or 'any' bike.

Some parts reminded me of Cinderella Man, the father trying to provide for his family at whatever cost under extreme economic strain... Pursuit Of Happyness also.

reply

I'm glad you liked it. Justice was not served in the end, but that was the reality and why neorealism became popular, because it wasn't cliched, you know the typical happy ending despite all the earlier conflicts.

Umberto D is probably better than bicycle thieves. I also think shoeshine is a better, and Orson Welles called it his favorite movie and called the Sica his favorite director and I'm interview from way back

reply

You may want to rephrase it to who is your favorite movie director of all time.

reply

Martin Scorsese

reply

Ridley Scott

reply

Yes! I consider him to be somewhat underrated, even though he's kind of hit-or-miss.
But when he hits it, he does out of the ballpark.
Obviously, Alien, Gladiator, Blade Runner are among his best... but I also loveee Hannibal and Matchstick Men.

reply

I didn't realise he did matchstick men. Love that flick.

reply

Underrated movie.

reply

john ford

reply

I have never seen a movie of his, which one would you recommend? Thanks for sharing.

reply

the searchers
how green was my valley
the quiet man

reply

I think many years ago I began watching The Searchers but it didn't click with me, I'll give it another try soon... thanks for the list.

reply

I could never pick one. They all make mistakes.

reply

Kubrick. He has done classics from different genres:

Comedy: Dr. Strangelove
Sci-Fi: 2001: A Space Odyssey
Horror: The Shining
War: Full Metal Jacket
Drama: Spartacus

reply

i'll go with this one.

throw in paths of glory on the war front - an absolute gem

reply

Wonderful... my favorites of him are The Shining and Eyes Wide Shut.

reply

I agree completely.

😎

reply

There was something truly special and unique about Kubrick.

reply

I agree. He went from genre to genre just doing one masterpiece after another.
