Reason we are here is fundamentally because our movie experience is at least good, otherwise we would not have a passion to share. The material plays a huge part. Without it, well, Hollywood would not even exist.

DVD player, TV, VHS player, receiver, speakers, what-ever.

One reason for this thread is I am questioning these made in china products. Are they good. I believe many vintage material especially the ones made in Japan gives a better movie experience. I would even go as far as saying made in china products killed entertainment.

Furthermore, I have a Sony D1011 receiver from the 90's and I think the sound is smooth, resolving and just excellent. A very powerful receiver. But, y'know, sometimes you just happen to have a good dvd player that converts the digital to analog brilliantly, and just like that, with your tv, the experience happens to be just what you need. Nothing fancy. Just the basic. Can be synergy, or, just a matter of taste.

All my stuff is barely modern. I wait till the bugs are worked out of the new tech then I usually wait till the price drops. Which usually means it's now Old tech.

Nothing fancy like the old days. Just a Vizio TV/sound bar package with a sony bluray/media player. Pretty much gets it all done. I jacked a polk audio sub woofer into the soundbar a few years back. All does is rumble. It's mostly annoying.

reply

Nothing fancy here, at all. 32" Vizio TV with a Vizio soundbar. It's the largest TV I've ever owned. I have no desire for a bigger TV than this one. I don't want to feel like my living room is a movie theater. Oh, and I added the soundbar to the TV because the TV's sound was kind of lame and tinny.

If I'm listening to music it's usually on my Sony mp3 player hooked to a basic headphone - I do this a lot when I'm doing yard work. I have one older radio/CD player that I can hook my mp3 player into and listen while I do stuff around the house. It's good enough. I don't need anything more. I grew up in the era of static-y AM radio, so just about anything beyond that is fine.

reply

At least AM radios were analog. Digital can be very crappy, sometimes subtly. You can have a big expensive digital system with a wow-factor, leave you speechless when you first hear it, but over a period, you realise it is missing something and you endlessly want to upgrade. On the other hand, some cheapies can be fully satisfying. If the digital to analog converter does what is needed, even a $50 DVD player can be "end game".

I just use a really cheap dvd player that plays all regions

brand/model?

reply

I just looked at it and I have no idea. No brand name on it anywhere. I bought it off Amazon a couple of years ago. Just searched for muti-region dvd player. I paid around $40 (Australian dollars).

It's a cheap hunk of junk. It was buzzing very violently and sometimes wouldn't play dvds due to the buzzing. I discovered that putting a heavy book on top of it fixes that problem.

If all else fails, try this proven method: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wpx0DY2SZVE

reply

Lol!

reply

But putting the book on top passes the vibrations along to
the disc you’re playing, degrading playback quality; just FYI.

It's better than it not playing at all

I need one of these badly.

The biggest waste of money. I dreaded the purchase because I had buyer's remorse.

?? KEF has an excellent reputation. A number of years ago I heard either the Reference Model 203 or 205 (can't remember which) and they sounded fantastic.

Why are you disappointed with the R700?
