Princess Bride
The Brave Little Toaster
I'll add Willow since I saw it here but I don't want to consider it a kid's movie.
Secret of NIMH

reply

Yes! Secret of NIMH. I loved that movie (and the book, incidentally).

reply

I need to read the book. You know about the real life situation that inspired the author?

reply

No I haven't heard about that. Robert C. O'Brien was an amazing author though, Z for Zacharia remains one of my favourite books of all time.

From what I remember of the story:
Some doctor studying behavior created a rat haven. He had observed rats in studies for so many years that he noticed certain recurring behavior patterns. He constructed a massive "perfect" rat environment. Huge rooms lined with plenty of feeding/drinking apparatuses and multiple comfortable nooks. He used his years of experience to inspire his efforts at supplying them with all things loved and needed by rats. Soft nesting material, ample room for expansion, lots of hiding places, limitless food, etc. The ultimate results were disturbing and disastrous. It turned into a schism pinata. Their paradise became a murder hole with a wide variety of bad behavior rife among the population. He tried two times, making adjustments each time. Same results. (this is all by memory so I may be editorializing subconsciously)

I wish I could remember the doctor's name or what O'Brien's connection to him was.

..... and then I looked it up. Why didn't I start with looking it up?

If someone asked me to show their child the best 3 kids films from the 80s I say...The Neverending Story, The Witches, and Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factoryxxxxx Clash of the Titans. Goonies is fine, but for me it didn't stand the test of time. These 3 I can watch today and still enjoy.

reply

Willy Wonka came out in 1971. That being said I think it stands up much better than the Tim Burton one.

reply

Ah sorry. That doesn't seem a good sign for me winning stonekeeper tonight if I can't remember the years:)

reply

Ah, you'll be fine. :)

1) 16 Candles
2) The breakfast club
3) Back to the future
4) Child's Play
5) The Little Mermaid

reply

I don’t think any of them are all that great. The β€˜90s started up a great era of kids films.
