I don't want to work.

I hate it, it gives me anxiety and I never had a job I enjoyed. It just makes me miserable.

The only reason I am even thinking of getting a job is because that's what's expected. But I don't think that's a good enough reason.

I'd rather live a stress free life and watch movies and series and play sports.

My only worry is what other people might think if I tell them I just don't care about working. Will I still be able to get a girlfriend? Will my parents be disappointed? Do people feel I am a leech? Because I collect social benefits? I would even understand it but I still don't care enough to work.

This work anxiety is been a part of my life since when I got my first job at a supermarket. And now 18 years later I am still dealing with it, I went to psychologists for 10 years and tried to figure out this anxiety for work but it hasn't helped. I have tried medication and it didn't help me. And I am just tired of trying and now I am just willing to accept that I will never work and I have decided to live my life the best way I can in my way without a job.

I heard about it and it seems very interesting. I always wanted to live a life like that.

reply

if you're worried about what others think, you have anxiety about not working as well.

the only way out is through

reply

As long as your bills are covered

reply

so don't work.

reply

Don't be a slave to the Man!

This is the best time ever to drop out.
Plenty of work on the other side.

reply

Have you ever experimented with psychedelics? A trip can be a profound experience and it seems like you're searching for something. I mean, don't you want more than the bare minimum to survive? What if these social benefits run out? If you're dead set on not working, at least try to do some volunteer work to give back to the community.

And imo, stay away from Psych meds. That shit will do you more harm than good and is completely over-prescribed in modern society.

reply

I don't think recommending psychedelics to someone with anxiety problems is a good idea.

reply

Is that a professional opinion? How do you know?

reply

Of course it's a professional opinion, or I'm not Dr Quasimodo ! Why introduce another potential risk when anxiety can be effectively treated without drugs ( prescription or otherwise ) by cognitive behaviour therapies ?

reply

Ok Dr Bellringer ;)
The reason I ask is because recent studies have suggested that psychedelics can benefit mental issues.

reply

Early days yet.

In the matter of drug taking I am always reminded of two people, Michelle Phillips from the Mamas and Papas and Syd Barrett from Pink Floyd. They both took a lot of LSD. She was absolutely fine and suffered no ill effects. Syd fried his brain, never worked again and died prematurely. It's a coin toss.

reply

Agreed.
In my long life and BROAD spectrum of experiences I have come to regret several of them.
Psychedelics isn't one.

reply

That's just a ridiculous rumor about Syd Barett. It's generally accepted that he had a pre-existing mental illness, most likely schizophrenia and he died from complications due to diabetes. LSD does not "fry your brain."

He said therapy and meds didn't work, so ya, I think I think trying out a low dose of shrooms would be worth a try.

From the Wikipedia Syd Barrett page:

Through late 1967 and early 1968, Barrett became increasingly erratic, partly as a consequence of his reported heavy use of psychedelic drugs such as LSD.[10] There is also speculation that he suffered from schizophrenia. Once described as joyful, friendly, and extroverted, he became increasingly depressed and socially withdrawn, and experienced hallucinations, disorganized speech, memory lapses, intense mood swings, and periods of catatonia.[6] Although the changes began gradually, he went missing for a long weekend and, according to several friends, including Wright, came back "a completely different person."[6]

One of the striking features of his change was the development of a blank, dead-eyed stare. He did not recognise old friends, and often did not know where he was; while on a tour of Los Angeles, Barrett is said to have exclaimed, "Gee, it sure is nice to be in Las Vegas!"[6] Many reports described him on stage, strumming one chord through the entire concert, or not playing at all.[73] At a show at The Fillmore in San Francisco, during a performance of "Interstellar Overdrive", Barrett slowly detuned his guitar. The audience seemed to enjoy such antics, unaware of the rest of the band's consternation.

Just a ridiculous rumour eh ? Although he died from pancreatic cancer at the age of 60 so not really a premature death.

You know Wiki can be edited by anyone, right? You shouldn't take what you read on their as fact

Syd was taking a lot of LSD at the time, around the age where symtoms of schizophrenia usually manifest themselves. If he indeed did have this illness, the LSD certainly didn't help matters, but it wasn't the cause.

Another theory is Aspergers Syndrome. Many of his siblings were actually on the spectrum according to his sister. I guess there is no way of know, but there is no evidence to suggest LSD use causes Schizophrenia. Here is an interesting article on the subjec.

You don't have a clue what you're talking about.
Do you?

reply

"what could go rong ?"

Nausea, seeing things that aren't there, getting cold when it's not cold out, and thinking you're smart? Look at this fool: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2uDQmp4Fu64

reply

I have heard this also and from my experience, good trips certainly out weigh the bad ones. 😎

reply

It's always been interesting to me how so many people are experts in things that they only know thru the experiences of others.
I've never had a bad trip.

reply

I’ve certainly had profound trips that made me think differently about life and how I view and treat people. I think about them even to this day and I regard them as positive.

The bad ones aren’t really that bad, but just crazy stuff happening or being around the wrong people.

reply

I usually spent around the first 45 minutes laughing!

reply

Yeah and the next day your face hurts.

reply

Oh yeah.

reply

No I haven't but I don't think it's a smart thing to do.

I waited a long time before I took medication because like you I feel it's over prescribed. But I was deperate and felt it was my last option.

reply

May I ask how long you took the medication for and did you stop abruptly? Doing so can cause a whole host of problems.

From personal experience, weaning off an SSRI was the worst thing I've ever experienced in my life. I wouldn't wish that on my worst enemy.

reply

I took them for about 2 years and then gradually quit over a period of 6 months.

reply

Don't take prescription meds, but take psychedelics, LOL. Sit down.

reply

Do you work for the pharmaceutical industry or something? Do you have any idea how over prescribed these kinds of drugs are, especially SSRI's? Doctors hand them out like candy, not even pointing the side effects or explaining the literal hell it can be getting off them to the patient, which is often worse that the problem that made you take them in the first place.

Psychedelics are powerful substances that need to be treated with respect, but can be a valuable tool for people dealing with a whole host of issues like anxiety and depression. Researched and taken in a responsible manner, they are light years safer than that shit from the pharmacy.

reply

Derp derp, Big Pharma!!!!

reply

Nice rebuttal. OP said meds didn't work for him. What do you have against alternative treatment?

reply

"What do you have against alternative treatment?"

When it makes you see things that aren't there, a lot.

reply

You have a very narrow minded view of the subject. There is a long history or psychedelic assisted therapy and to simply write it off is ignorant.
