My cousin says that "Se7en" is a horror movie and it's not even debatable. I say it's not a horror movie.

reply

I would call it a thriller, not a horror movie.

reply

Me too. My cousin is on something.

reply

I would consider Se7en a crime drama and not a horror film. Imdb lists its genres " Crime | Drama | Mystery | Thriller".

reply

Yep I agree with you and IMdb. "Horror" is too strong of a genre to put Se7en in. Some parts I suppose could be horror, but not enough to solely make it so.

reply

That's a hard one
Halloween (78) is listed as a thriller and a horror

The terms are often interchangeable

reply

The Michael Myers character is maybe supernatural. So I am willing to accept the horror tag for this one.

reply

Even without the supernatural aspect, I would still say it's a horror based on tone. That theme music is definitely there to scare us.

reply

I'd say more of a thriller. But some movies are hard to categorize.

Certainly it edges into horror territory at times, especially at the end.

reply

Me too. I'd say it's similar to Silence of the Lambs but I'd barely consider that a horror.

reply

Oh I thought it was a comedy.

reply

Depends on your idea of what horror is. To me it is kind of like the Saw films in parts and yes, I know this came first but my point is that Saw is seen as horror as far as I know. There are some horrific scenes in it.

I think your cousin has a point but horror isn't the point of the film so back to thriller with extreme brutality/horrific images?

reply

I don't know. Let's say there's a movie about surgeons and they show a lot of blood and guys. I wouldn't consider that a horror. To me, Se7en falls in the thriller category. It's not really scary, nor do I feel it's trying to be. It just seems like an edge of your seat thriller.

reply

The intent is definitely to be a crime/thriller I agree. But there are Saw/Slasher type aspects to it even though there is a lot more psychological finesse about it than your average Saw/Slasher type film.

I guess these things are open to interpretation though. A lot of people don't consider things like Buffy and Supernatural to be sci fi but they seem to go in that category.

reply

I guess what upset me is that my cousin said that it's not even debatable. I mean, really?

reply

Yeah people like that are boring to converse with. I'm at least open to the idea of different possibilities.

reply

I have had this debate many a time. Horror involves something supernatural, monsters, aliens, witches and such. Se7en is a crime drama/thriller.

reply

Yeah...Se7en is a thriller designed to shake viewers.

reply

I agree. There's nothing really scary about it. I don't consider Zodiac to be a horror either but that had scarier elements.

reply

I disagree that horror involves the supernatural. A lot of slasher films are just average people killing other people.

reply

I agree. A slasher film is unmistakably a sub genre of horror.

Go into a Blockbuster back in the day and what section do you find all the slasher films in?

reply

I respectfully disagree. Psycho is classified as horror but it's a slasher flick. That's doesn't mean it can't be scary or have horrific scenes.

reply

I'm saying that slasher is a sub-genre of horror. I was simply refuting

Horror involves something supernatural, monsters, aliens, witches and such.
Some of my favourite horrors have not a single supernatural element. 😀 That was all

In my opinion, Se7en is a crime thriller.

reply

My beef is that too many movies are being classified as horror. A movie like Green Room is classified as horror. It is a crime drama about violent Neo-Nazis.

reply

It's a pet peeve as mine as well. Especially when I'm looking for a horror to watch and I get directed to a drama that has a murder.

reply

There are a couple of hard to watch scenes that feel like horror, but I'd say crime thriller.

reply

Exactly. There's tension, but no horror.
