Do you like country music?
I like the more romantic, slow ballads like those from LeAnn Rimes, LeAnn Womack, Shania Twain, Faith Hill, etc. rather than the fast-paced songs.

shareYes! Sturgill Simpson is one of the best in country music these days.

Btw, Trisha Yearwood's 'Sad Eyes' is a cover of a Springsteen song.
Do you know the song that has the refrain, "The Road Goes on Forever and the Party Never Ends"?
It's a little bittersweet and has a nice twist, but it's like a country rock story song.
And The Mavericks did a nice cover of a Springsteen tune, maybe All That Heaven Will Allow? Or Tougher Than the Rest? Bruce songs are pretty good to cover for some reason.
snepts, the song you first mentioned seems familiar, but I can't place it as of this moment.
Meanwhile, The Mavericks covered All That Heaven Will Allow.
In addition, Raul Malo, the lead singer of The Mavericks did a great version of Downbound Train.
And you are oh so right about Springsteen songs being good to cover.
I own three cover packages of Bruce's songs ...
One Step Up / Two Steps Back: The Songs of Bruce Springsteen, which is a two disc package containing 28 covers of his songs
Badlands: A Tribute To Bruce Springsteen's 'Nebraska', which contains covers of all ten songs on his 'Nebraska' album plus three more (one of which is the Raul Malo cover I wrote about)
Light of Day: A Tribute To Bruce Springsteen, which contains covers of 37 of his songs on two cds
Hahaha Z= D
It's Robert Earl Keen. He's part of a trinity of 3 named Texas Troubadours. Townes Van Zandt, REK, and ... ?
i know that song through joe ely's version.

I have Joe Ely doing a very similar song, Me and Billy the Kid. Has a very similar cadence, and is a story song.
sharei like that song a lot too.
i really love the album ely recorded with jimmie dale gilmore & butch hancock as the flatlanders back in the 70s, if you know that at all.
i'm also a huge, huge, huge jimmie dale gilmore fan.
I'll have to remember that. I'm aware of him now, but I wasn't aware of the Flatlanders when they first hit the scene, and I've very slowly caught on to the Austin sound. (I think that's a fair characterization, yes?)
shareThe only version of a non-Bruce Bruce song I have heard is Dave Edmunds' From Small Things Big Things One Day Come. It's a caricature of a Bruce song, but it rocks with Edmunds. Includes a barrel house boogie coda.
shareIs Bonnie Raitt considered country? I do like her.
shareNot in my circles, but a lot of good music falls in and out of genre categories. A band like Indigo Girls aren't considered country, but I'll bet they could add pedal steel to some arrangement and create a nice high and lonesome song.
shareI can sort of see how she might be considered crossover. Sort of :)
shareNot most of it. I do like Patsy Cline, JD Souther, KD Lang, and some bands that have a country influence
shareNot really but Johnny Cash was awesome.
I do also really like the Rawhide theme by Frankie Lane but I consider that western.
I love Ring of Fire!
shareBeen done by other people quite a few times. One of mine is Carlene Carter on a great album called Musical Shapes. I think she was married to Nick Lowe at the time and he produced the album. It's a great piece of 80s power pop/country.
Gee ... Carlene Carter? Why is that name so familiar?
I have to admit I'd never heard of Carlene Carter before. But I love the version by Cash with the mariachi-style music.
shareWhat's the difference between country music and western music? I searched YouTube for the answer but came up with nada.
sharehere's the technical answer
The primary traditional difference between the two styles is that country music is simpler and uses fewer instruments, relying on guitar, fiddle, banjo, and harmonica, whereas the music of the Southwest tends toward steel guitars and big bands whose style verges on swing.
Thanks!
shareNot the newer stuff, but I can appreciate traditional country music which is its pure form. Things like the Carter Family, Appalachian recordings and such. That's real country.
shareWhilst it’s not my cup of tea, I have a real appreciation of the craft that goes into this genre.
shareA whole sub-genre of Country music is Western Swing, a style Bob Wills & his Texas Playboys excelled at and kept alive by the contemporary group Asleep at the Wheel. Most of it is very upbeat and meant to be danced to.
