I hereby declare the 1980s as the absolute worst decade for music and movies.

The 80s had some classic movies: Back to the Future, Die Hard, The Breakfast Club. They also had some classic albums: Michael Jackson's "Thriller", U2's "The Josua Tree", Bruce Springsteen's "Born in the U.S.A." None of these are enough to save the utterly abysmal decade knows as the '80s.

It's the most dated decade. Who thought synthesizers in music was going to be a good idea? Those awful drum machines weren't pleasant on the ear either. How about those weird lasers you would see in music videos.

80% of the movies had such a boring feel to them with music completely out of place. Gunshots in movies all sounded the same and didn't sound like gunshots at all. Every actor playing a cop had a mustache and were all "loose cannons".

The '80s were not kind to us.

I love the 80's.

I don't have a favourite decade for anything, but a good number of movies that I love are from the 80s. I completely disagree that they are boring.

Synth pop is great, the keytar is awesome, and no naysayer will ever convince me otherwise.

Although I wrote favorably about the 80s, I now remember something I quoted from Wikipedia on another thread that may support your position about movies. It was abut Michael Cimino and Heaven's Gate (1980):

"(Heaven's Gate) had a wider effect on the American film industry. During the 1970s, relatively young directors such as Coppola, Scorsese, Peter Bogdanovich, George Lucas, William Friedkin, and Steven Spielberg had been given large budgets with very little studio control (see New Hollywood). The studios evolved away from the director-driven film and eventually led to the new paradigm of the high concept feature, epitomized by Jaws and Star Wars...As the new high-concept paradigm of filmmaking became more entrenched, studio control of budgets and productions became tighter, ending the free-wheeling excesses that had begotten Heaven's Gate."

The music of the 1980s was fun. I think it was a continuation of the disco phase from the 1970s and a counter reaction to the serious music of the late 60s and early 70s. As for movies it was mixed. I have trouble condemning one decade completely when it comes to movies.

I usually stick with 70's with both music and movies. Every decade has their worst, but I feel the 70s were more consistent.

Michael Jackson was THE 1980s.

Probably right. Second only to the 1950s. And both decades dominated by Republican administrations. Tell you anything about the mood of the country during those times?

reply

The 50s had some great movies but the music was awful.

Who thought synthesizers in music was going to be a good idea?

The 80’s:

The Shining and John Carpenter’s The Thing are among the best horror films made. Also the entire slasher genre peaked in the early 80’s. The original Woman in Black scares me to this day.

Conan the Barbarian and Excalibur are amazing entries in the fantasy category.

War films? Come and See is the most amazing war film I’ve ever seen. Full Metal Jacket, Das Boot and Platoon rank at the top as well.

Don’t like synth tracks? The synth track rules The Terminator. And I can’t imagine the movie without it.

Red Dawn is a truly 80’s movie and one of my favorites.

Raiders of the Lost Ark!

I also love all the Italian B grade films from the 80’s. When I have time I’ll have to post 80’s music. It’s my favorite era.

I don't know. There was a lot of truly bad stuff and a lot of great stuff, but almost all of it was memorable, if not outright iconic. It's the very reason 80s nostalgia hasn't disappeared from film and TV, but is actually almost increasing in popularity. In contrast, there's a lot of gems from, say, the 90s, and also a lot of blah, hence it not being as popular.
