Should rich people give to the poor?

Or find ways to spend their money and enjoy the finer things in life?

I don't know, what do your desert scrolls say?

#1 - I'm not rich, far from it. I have roommates to help pay for my modest mortgage and I have over $15K in credit card debt. (A lot of this was from trying to stay afloat, not buying silly things.)
But I see a lot of people on street corners with signs saying Anything Helps and the like. I could probably hand someone a dollar a day, (but not EVERY day) and I don't think I would be changing a damn thing. Handing random beggars a bit of $$ does not seem to address the problem.
There are aspects to being rich that are commendable, and yes, we hope they are actually being taxed in a fashion that is equitable in relation to what much poorer people make. I guess if someone who is well off has zero empathy for people who could use a hand, that's a bad look but some people are like that. It's the system as a whole that needs a lot of fixing, and we might start with the US Defense budget.

I give to beggars from time to time but mostly don't. Too many. And honestly I don't have change at times.

I prefer to give to beggars over charity. If I give someone money for a fifth I can make his weekend. If I give 20$ to charity I can maybe buy a family of four some hamburger helper

Yes.

I mean depending on how rich they are, they should be able to do both right? Without making it political, I absolutely think for purely moral reasons the wealthy should help those less fortunate.

A couple times I would see someone saying someone like Springsteen is a hypocrite for being rich while claiming poor people are getting the short stick. I don't see it that way. Even if he never gave a dime to charity, he's done so much to bring attention to the Working Man's Troubles, I respect him for that. And I imagine he also does his share of charity and ("gasp") pays his taxes. No shame on Bruce.

It's a tough one. That smacks of 'do as I say not as I do.'

reply

No. That's not the point.
If a person is successful they should enjoy the reward but still be mindful of what's going on for the rest of us. All he needs to do is honestly pay his taxes, yet so many rich people - of either political stripe - try to avoid if. Frankly, it's unpatriotic.
Enjoy your wealth, make good investments for and in your kids. But please have a sense of proportion and do a few things to acknowledge how fortunate and how well this rigged system has worked for you.

Which means it's cut and dry, blatant hypocrisy and not such a tough one at all.

reply

I think 'should' isn't the right word. Anyone who has more than enough money to be happy should want to give, but not be obligated to.

reply

It is the right thing to give money to the poor, it is not the right thing for the government to force them to do it through taxation.

All great wealth is built on poverty.
