What are the most depressing movies you've ever seen?

Not sad, but depressing. The ones you love even though you felt like crap after watching it.

Here's a few:

Cries & Whispers (1972)
Happiness (1998)
Ordet (1955)
Amour (2012)

Grave of the Fireflies (1988)
Schindler's List (1993)

Those come to mind quickly.

reply

grave of the fireflies for sure.
it took me several tries to get through it, because i had such a strong emotional reaction to the opening 15 minutes or so.
not to sound like too much of a softie.

Schindler's List and Irreversible were a bit too much for me

Both were pretty brilliant movies but only one watch!
Just once:/

I found Amour (2012) unbearable from both a human and cinematic perspective. I love Haneke but after the first 30 minutes I found it impossibly slow.

Not sure how I'd feel about watching Schindler's List again, though I haven't much interest in watching most movies more than once.

Maybe I'll check out Irreversible.

reply

I'd consider Irreversible more disturbing than depressing but there are definitely depressing elements in it. You should check it out.

reply

Schindler's List was factual...the events in that film make me wonder how we're all the same species

Irreversible really was brilliant but it's got no rewatch value
A violent rape happens, a beautiful woman is slain, there are a bunch of disturbing scenes and it's all told in reverse...It's pretty great movie making but damn, only one viewing for me!

You jogged my memory. Saw it on a few movie lists (forget what I was searching for) but never got to it.

Heavenly Creatures (1994)
In Darkness (2011)
The Road (2009)

In Darkness is an underrated gem.

reply

Yes, I agree.

I just saw that last week. It's very depressing but I was a little disappointed in the movie.

reply

Disappointed? Why’s that?

reply

I don't know. It just seemed like the pacing was all over the place. Maybe I expected more...

reply

I saw it as a teenager at the height of the Cold War, so maybe that had an influence on how it affected me.

So many of these I haven't heard of that I should check out.
