RIP To Michael Jackson who died 10 years ago today. Where were you when you heard the news?

Seems like yesterday. RIP

reply

Hard to believe it's been 10 years!

reply

That's what I was thinking when I heard this mentioned today.

reply

I remember this broke around this time of day 4pm Eastern. I was glued to Wolf Blitzer on CNN.

reply

I think it was the same day Farah Fawcett died. What bad luck for her. Michael Jackson stole her thunder. Anybody who dies the same day as MJ will always be overshadowed.

reply

Oh man, how it hurts to remember this.

I read on IMDb that he had been hospitalized, and I had to wake my parents up and tell them. Then I called my sister too to tell her about it, despite the fact that she was sleeping and was going to work the next day.

We were going to attend one of Michael's concerts in London later that summer too. But now, that was never going to happen. :(

reply

Yes, I remember that ill-fated concert. No way he could've done 50 shows given his condition at the time.

reply

He knew it himself, and that is why he had so much drugs pumped into his body. :(

reply

Yeah, who the fck does propofol anyway?

reply

[deleted]

Appearantly, it is often used to sedate patients during a surgery. It is hardly supposed to be used for insomnia though.

reply

Propofol is used in surgery, and on ICU patients. Using it at home is reacing a level of drug abuse that John Belushi never dreamed of! I mean I'd heard some nasty rumors about MJ and drugs, but I had no idea how bad things were.

But I was at work when I heard the news. I wasnt a bit surprised.

reply

His crew of hangers-on seem like a bunch of enabling cowards

Where were his bodyguards and groupies?

They just let MJ dope himself to death?

It's all very sad and questionable

reply

The story of Jackson's death is horrible. Jackson found the worst, most corrupt and incompetent person who ever held an MD's license, and kept the guy on staff to load him up with prescription drugs. If you read the autopsy report you'll find that "Doctor" Murray loaded up Jackson with all the benzos and opiates in the world and Jackson was still wide awake and begging for Propofol because it was the only way he could sleep, and the Propofol killed him. Yes, Murray was criminally negligent and deserved the jail sentence and loss of license that he got, but IMHO Jackson was responsible for his own death. He'd abused so many controlled substances that they no longer had any effect on him, and he turned to abusing anesthetics, which has to be some kind of record for celebrity druggies.

And I'm not one to believe in conspiracy theories, but Jackson was supposed to tour the world, and was too sick and frail to have a hope of ever doing all the concerts he was being paid to do. I still wonder if the concert promoters realized early on that their only hope of making a profit was to have Jackson die, and maybe they found "Doctor" Murray for him...

reply

Jeez...I did not know all of this, I only knew he was an addict...Pretty awful really!

reply

I'd heard Jackson was an addict and that's why I wasn't surprised to hear the news... but holy shit the real story staggered me.

Don't do drugs, kids. It's stupid and will kill you in the end.

reply

True!

I'll probably keep on drinking but screw drugsđź‘Ť lol...Hic!

reply

Funny !

It is hardly easy to get rid of a drug addiction though. It becomes a disease, that you can't control.

reply

Have you ever heard anything about Jackson going to rehab or trying to quit prescription drugs? Because I've read untold reams of stuff about him (don't ask), but I've never heard anything about him making any serious attempt to kick an addiction, or spending any of his massive fortune on getting help. Instead, he found serious ways to feed the beast.

So yes, addiction is a disease, but that doesn't mean addicts aren't still responsible for themselves and their actions, and shouldn't do their absolute damndest to deal with their addiction before it harms them. Or someone else. And yes, I say that as an alcoholic who's been sober for fifteen years, so I have a right to talk.

reply

I'm going to step out here and say anyone who has gone through a change of appearance as radical from Off The Wall to Thriller and beyond, I'm not surprised by anything. The dude was indeed, Off The Wall. Something made this guy into a real private freak-a-zoid, and it's only his popularity that has kept him from being some combination of Roman Polanski and maybe Charles Manson. He was nuts.

reply

He couldn't control his vitiligo though.

reply

If that was a real condition, I will try to modify my feelings. But the nose, the whole facial structure seemed extremely different. And with all the Wonderland stuff, and I'm Bad, he was really reaching for that rainbow, so I just say he was inebriated with his own celebrity.

reply

Vitiligo is listed in his autopsy. He had to use lightening cream to treat his vitiligo and even out his skin tone so that he didn't look like a zebra. In fact, they found tubes of hydroquinone and benoquin at his home when he died.

Other than the nose, his facial structure didn't change much. I think the vitiligo and the hair made it seemed like he changed a lot. Especially if you look at these pics:

And thank you for your posts. :)

reply

And how is it your business what Michael looked like, or even if he was "nuts"? Let the poor man rest in peace!

reply

Indeed it's not. I know the Jackson family will ignore me so as to rest in peace, resting in the full knowledge I never molested boys, had facial surgery to look "better", made umpteen million $$ and became the King of Pop. No one that big and weird Rests In Peace, and I'm not the one rocking the coffin, if he hasn't been cryogenically entombed.
Jesus ! Is he your example of an upstanding, normal citizen like Greg Peck, James Stewart, Gary Cooper? In fact, I think his whole family is effed up and the sooner they depart this fragile Stage, the better.

reply

What's up with your hateful och judgemental attitude? Does it make you feel like you're better than others, or something? You seem to have no idea what it was like to be Michael Jackson, or any of his family members. In fact, you seem to not know the first thing about who he was. How he had to suffer for fifty years, and it was largely because of insensitive morons like you. And it only makes you look like a pathetic loser, when you keeping hating on a man, who has been dead for ten years, and on his family too. Get a life!

reply

I had a colonoscopy in March and they used propofol - that is powerful stuff.

reply

Always liked his moon-walking.

reply

"Where were you when you heard the news?"

reply

Got it

reply

I remember it very well. Quite a shock.

reply

I actually don't. As per my comment above, when he croaked, I was not surprised at all, or at least I don't remember. Dude was effed up.

reply

Well, I mean more the idea of such an iconic personality being gone.

He was certainly effed up mentally, but I was not aware he had such a serious drug addiction. I had no clue about propofol either.

reply

Not that I want to beat the subject to death, but I thought he was far enough off the rails that the fact that he died didn't make that imprint like a lot of other things do. I was off his bandwagon way before this, and actually have appreciated his solo career a little more after his passing. Don't Stop Til You Get Enough is a song I missed the first time around, but am very impressed with now.
