Anyone think guided tours and sight seeing can be boring?

I’m in Europe now and having a hell of a time but the constant walking and listening to someone yap for hours at a time is getting old.

I only do those my first day in a new city to get the lay of the land, especially hop on and off bus tours. I hate chatty guides and prefer interactive headsets where you can choose as much or as little info as you like.

Depends... if I'm going to developed countries, like western Europe, not being guided is best. I like the freedom to explore. But if it's a third world country where safety is questionable like India or Ghana or eastern Europe, guided tour is preferred.

reply

I don't like them. I prefer to decide what I want to do and see. Not have the "leader" march me right by something I really want to see or or do and to something I have no interest in. Especially if I don't know when or even if I will ever be there again.

Hop on, Hop off bus day one, to get your bearings.
After that, do your own thing.

Maybe you've done too many in too short a time?

I like to do a mixed balance of both guided tour stuff and doing my own thing. I'm a big believer in exploring alone for myself, but there is value in doing a tour too.

I think guided tours can be a great way of someone who is good at their job getting to inform you of everything that's interesting which you may not find out from the internet or guide books and leaflets. Tour conductors often know little stories you won't hear otherwise. I had a really fun guided tour at the Tower of London once, and he told us stuff that isn't officially in other sources of information.

And then after the guided part, I spent the rest of the time just wandering back around by myself - you can do both.

Try to cut down on the guided tours and wander about by yourself, maybe looking up stuff you want to know if the need arises. I think you've probably just overloaded on the guided ones and need a break from them.

Only if you're in a place with not much to look at. Plus, the walking gets tiresome after a while. Best guided tours I ever went on involved a bus tour of a Mexican seaside town, and a tram ride in San Diego's Wild Animal Park.
