Calling all Texans or people that know Texas well.

My wife & I are going to travel round Texas for a month in [EDIT] April (not August as originally planned) with our 5 year old daughter. Whilst I’ve already drawn up an itinerary, does anyone have any suggestions of where to go or any ‘must see’ places that I may have overlooked.

Currently aiming for: -
Dallas, Arlington, Fort Worth, Waco, Austin, New Braunfels, San Antonio, Corpus Christi, Padre Island, Port Arkansas, Galveston, Woodlands, Houston (phew!).

EDIT - Sorry guys, first I said August, then December, now it's April *shakes head*

Thanks everybody.

Dealey Plaza and the Texas School Book Depository Museum in Dallas.

You bet.

I'd recommend Houston, where the Space Center is. San Antonio is a nice place too. I'd highly recommend the Riverwalk. It's a fun place to visit, whether at night or during the day. They have shops, restaurants, malls, movie theaters, etc. Galveston has beautiful beaches. I've been there twice and the water was lovely. They also have nice pier stores along the beach, so you can find beautiful trinkets from the ocean, like seashells that sound like the ocean when you hold them up to your ear.

Be warned, August is a brutal month in Texas. Wear lightweight, light-colored clothes, keep the sunblock handy, drink plenty of fluids, maybe wear broad-rimmed hats, and stay inside in the afternoon. The day is hottest around 4 pm.

Brilliant! Some great tips there.

I will be honest with you. I'm a California native, but I've moved around a lot. Part of that involved living in northern Texas between 2007 and 2012, so I got a good feel for the state and its weather, as well as vacationing in certain areas over the years. My family even picked up a slight "twang" in our voices while living there, hehe. Everyone noticed when we moved back to the west coast a few years ago.

reply

I lived in Florida as a kid and people really have trouble picking up my accent because I have a bit of a posh English accent combined with a little East Coast US, which makes me sound slightly Irish!?

reply

As far from Texas as you can get during August, would be my recommendation...

reply

What makes you say that?

reply

The temperature i'd imagine

reply

Austin is a great city, but watch those toll roads.

reply

When you say 'watch the tolls roads', do you mean: -
Be aware they exist?
They're expensive?
There's a lot of them?
The traffic is heavy?

reply

August is not a good month to visit Texas. However, if you're determined to go I recommend the Manned Space Center in Houston, San Antonio, and Big Bend State Park.

reply

Great tips. Would December be a better option?

reply

Yes, much better. Anything is better than summer.

reply

Looks like we've decided on doing Oz in August and Texas in December, so thanks for the heads up.

reply

I would not go to Texas in December.

https://www.currentresults.com/Weather/Texas/temperature-december.php

There is a chance of severe weather in December such as ice storms.

reply

Right then, looks like it's going to be: -
August - Singapore & OZ
December - TBA
April - Texas

Once again, thanks for all the help - there's nothing like a little local knowledge to help prevent making mistakes.

reply

Me again. I just confirmed my earlier advice in stating spring is the best time to visit Texas as per the following:

A wise move climate wise, and you're welcome. Glad to help a FFF.

Cool! I've been to Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, China and Japan, but never to Singapore or OZ. OZ and NZ are on the drawing board.

reply

I ate tarantula in Vietnam.
I speak Khmer.
Lived in Thailand for a while and speak Thai.
Japan is the craziest place (in a good way) that I've been to.
My wife's sister and husband live in Singapore, so we go there fairly regularly.
China & NZ are on our radar.
Travelling is cool!

reply

Wow! I can't even stand to be in the same room with a tarantula! Sounds like you've led a fascinating life. Travelling IS cool. How many countries have you been to? I've been to 32.

Have fun in Singapore and Texas!

If you count the UK as 4, then 34 (I think) - mostly Europe, Asia, North & Central America, if not, then 31. At least 2 more will be added by the end of the year (fingers crossed). And yet, I feel as if I've barely scratched the surface. I want to see as much as I can before I'm told I'm too old (hopefully in the far flung future).

Is there a particular area, geographically, that you head towards or is it all over?

reply

I count the UK as four. I travel all over. I live in the USA, and have traveled to North and South America, Europe, Africa and Asia. Australia and New Zealand are on the drawing board. I would eventually like to get to Antarctica.

😎

reply

Antarctica is a bit too cold for me, however, I'd like to go north (Iceland or Norway) to see the Northern Lights one day.

reply

They're definitely worth it! I saw them in Coldfoot Camp, Alaska in December 2015.
They were gorgeous. Coldfoot Camp is located 60 miles north of the Arctic Circle, and
the temperature fell to 40 below at night.

August is about THE worst time you could plan a trip to Texas. Seriously, the worst - temperatures reach their peak in that month, and humidity too. Is there any way in the universe that you can do this at any other time of year, just not August?

It's so hot you won't even want to be outside. Just standing in the shade without moving, you're soaked in your own sweat after five or six minutes.

San Antonio's River Walk is lovely. Austin is a great place with lots to see and do and beautiful places to dine, swim (check out Bull Creek and Twin Falls) and visit. Art culture, counter-culture, music of every genre, fun and laid back.

Hamilton's Pool is a drive out west from Austin and is a natural swimming hole set in a steep hike through the woods, with a small natural waterfall -- stunningly beautiful, google the pictures, though it's smaller than the pics make it look, but well worth it.

Pedernales Falls, also a stunning area of natural beauty a short drive out of Austin.

Also Gruene, pronounced "Green," quaint little tourist spot used to be an old settler town.

Part of the actual historic Chisholm Trail is out north of Austin in Round Rock.

You could make Austin your central stay and radiate out from there to all these spots plus San Antonio.

Just, not in August, lol.

reply

Many thanks for the tips. We've decided to do Oz in August & Texas in December.

reply

December for TX is a much better choice than August, but....it can be cold! Sunny, but chilly.

If that's the only option though, it's preferable to August, so, hope you have a great time!

reply

It'll be warmer than jolly old England, that's for sure - we'll have a super time thanks, I'm certain.

reply

Oh I don't know - I've lived through a few Texas winters that got as cold as an average British winter - my first winter there, I was shocked that it felt just as cold as the England I'd left behind! We rushed out and bought a thick quilt for the bed.

They also have quite bad ice storms - shuts down the whole city, everything frozen, black ice on roads.

I see you've amended your plans to a visit to Texas in April - that's pretty much perfect! It's nicely warming up but not scorching yet. In central TX it starts to get super-humid in April, like walking outside is walking into a sauna, but that's not as bad as 100 degrees F in August plus humidity.

Take lots of light summer clothing, but also something warm for, ironically, being in a super-air-conditioned place like the movie theater or inside a shopping mall. Some interiors in TX are cooled to frigid. It's a place of contrasts, lol!

reply

Brilliant advice. I think I've changed the dates for the trips around about a dozen times now, lol. Still, better to get it right and avoid disappointment. Now, where to go in December, hmmmm?

reply

Bali?

reply

My wife is Indonesian, so we’ve been there a gazillion times (lovely though it is).

reply

Tahiti? Or how about Belize?

reply

I shall do some research, thanks.

I lived in Texas, so if at all possible avoid Texas like the plague in August! The best time to visit Texas is in the spring....April is the best month. It’s beautiful, the weather is great, Blue Bonnets are blooming, etc. The month of May can be tornado season. December not good either. Can be very cold. The saying is “If you don’t like the weather....wait 5 minutes!” September thru October not bad weather. The Texas State Fair is held then so they must know something.

All of the places mentioned are good recommendations. Six Flags Over Texas was one of my favorites. Lots to do and lots to see in Texas. You will see changes in the landscape as Texas is a huge state. You can request a Texas Tourist Guide from here:

I agree, December can be very chilly and those cold days aren't much fun. It's better than August as a choice to visit but yeah, I'd say early Spring would have been more the ideal time.
