First off, whether you realize it or not, you have asked two separate questions ...
1) What is my favorite pre-Star Wars science fiction film?
2) Which one do I consider to be the best?

So, to answer you questions ...
My favorite is 'Forbidden Planet'. I've loved that film ever since I first saw it when I was a kid. (I am now 67.)
The one I consider to be the best is 'Metropolis' from 1927. That film was so far ahead of it's time.

Your choices are the same as mine, CKid, you’re just faster on the draw than I am! Fritz Lang’s Metropolis is often overlooked, being a silent film, but, oh!, what an influence it has had! The production design, cinematography and even the FX were ages ahead of their time.

This is just one....The Illustrated Man (1969)
Ray Bradbury was a favorite sci-fi/fantasy author when I was young and I thought this was a good adaptation of the book.

Forbidden Planet
The Day the Earth Stood Still
Invasion of the Body Snatchers
The Thing From Another World

Planet of the Apes
Invasion of the Body Snatchers
Frankenstein

Does it have to specifically be under the sci-fi genre label? Because I think Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory had a huge sci-fi element to it and I still love that movie.

reply

If Star Wars is sci-fi then anything can be sci-fi.

reply

Then that. I actually seriously think Willy Wonka makes a lot of interesting points through a sci-fi lens.
