How soon before you stop buying physical media and why?

Few people still buy CDs.
DVDs continue to be sold because there are still more DVD players than Blu-Ray and 4K combined.

3D Media for movies is pretty much defunct within the USA.

Streaming services are being either consolidated or being planned for introduction very soon.

But will YOU still buy media and what will you do with your VHS tapes, DVDs and Blu-Rays that you've already purchased? What about all of those digital copies you bought?

reply

I borrow dvds from the local library. My cd collection is full. I don't buy any these days.

reply

That is an excellent point. I have in the past also turned to our local library for certain media.

I haven't bought physical media in years.
The VHS tapes I still have are gathering dust. Not sure why I haven't thrown them out. Probably the nostalgia.
Besides games, I haven't bought any dvds. Anything I burned myself I could just copy to an external hard drive or upload somewhere, if I really wanted to.

I still buy CDs and paper books. Never was a DVD collector.

I still buy DVDs of stuff I feel like I have to have. I can't remember the last time I bought a CD. About six or seven years ago I decided I was going to collect records. Big mistake. They are heavy and I don't ever listen to them anymore.

reply

I have a huge vinyl collection and the bulk are 12” singles like DJ records. I also collect VHS and DVD so I don’t think I’ll ever go digital.

reply

Do tut mean that you’ll never do streaming? DVD is a digital medium.

reply

R_Kane yes sorry I said that wrong. What I meant is I don’t think I will ever depend on down loaded files or streamed music or film for my collection, although I do have some streamed albums for use when driving. I will always prefer to place a needle on a record for listening. To me nothing beats holding the vinyl album, enjoying the art work and even its smell. I feel the same about VHS and DVDs. In fact some of my most treasured films are some of those obscure B, cult, horror or foreign films only available on VHS.

They are heavy and I don't ever listen to them anymore.
But when you do you will appreciate the sound quality.

reply

Probably not. My record player is far from ideal and at this point I don't really want to replace it with a better model.

I still buy physical media, but I'm more selective than I used to be. I borrow CDs and DVDs from my library. If I find something that becomes a favorite I'll buy a physical copy. Streaming is fine, but frustrating when your favorites disappear from a streaming service. Luckily, my internet is pretty stable, but I'm running into problems where some episodes of shows won't play. I'm not sure where the issue lies. Is it my Roku or the streaming site? I don't know enough to be sure which it is. Grrr.

I have a massive vinyl and cd collection and continue to buy them. I got rid of 7 bin bags of VHS tapes, but kept about 100 Jackie Chan films & music videos. I also got rid of all my DVDs, bar my top 20 or so. Never got into Blu-ray and won’t buy any films going forward.

reply

Jackie Chan has music videos?

reply

You know what I meant😉
