If you owned a movie theatre, and money wasn't a factor

How would you set it up? Say you had 5 screens. The rest of the theater is blank space.. What are all the things you'd do?

reply

probably have the best technology could buy

reply

Oh, and the empty space would be available for free to those people who are trying to do something art-related. An incentive for people to indulge in ART, experimentation, and not having to worry about commercialism because if its good, it will be played in the cinema.

Laser Floyd at midnight on weekends?

reply

Definitely!

(We'll be taking recommendations, too!)

It would be like a grand theatre of old. One screen, a balcony, a bar/lounge area with a showcase of local art, and it would have a stage so it could be used for both movies and live theatre. I have seen some really inventive theatre in the last couple of years where there has been intricate interaction with the screen. I'd like to show both new and old movies, but the newer ones would be more independent, but also some fun blockbusters. I think it would be fun to have someone give a talk before with trivia about the movie.

I'd basically run it like this:

They’re having some fun.

reply

That's what I'm talking about. People go to the movies to have fun.

reply

Bless them. I wouldn’t enjoy watching a movie in that environment, but I love watching people have a great time like that.

Personally, I’ll stick to my matinee showings which are mostly attended by seniors with extremely good manners.

reply

That's perfectly fine. I regularly attend those showings as well. I'm just saying that my business would cater to the crowd that doesn't exhibit considerate behavior during movies. Wouldn't it be nice if the people who actually want to pay attention to a movie and the people who do whatever they want during it could both be served by a business that caters to their consumer interests? Think about it.

reply

Yes, and I think the market does that now. I know which showings to attend if I’m looking for a tranquil viewing experience.

reply

Show the newest Superhero movies but have one screen reserved for showing older films. Sadly there's not any theaters that do show older movies in my town. Frankly though I don't think I'd want to run a theater since the people who make the movies get all the ticket money and I would have to make all my money off snacks and drinks.

reply

I'd turn it into an old fashioned theatre, Modern sound equipment and bigger seats though. I prefer the old style ones to the modern multiplexes. Definitely a bar, restaurant and a smaller screen for old horrors and cult film screenings.

I'll start by first offering an honest ratings system:

KA - Kids & Adults: Parents may actually enjoy this movie. The plot is interesting, the characters are fleshed out, you genuinely don't know how the plot will play out (aside from the obvious), there are some clever gags (even a few for the adults), the CGI/effects are decent and there's no obnoxious singing

KO - Kids Only: You're in for a bad time.

Rating TO: Trailer Only. When any and every decent or funny scene in the entire movie was already displayed in the 30 second trailer.

"I for Interrupted." This movie lacks a proper ending, and stops right in the middle in order to get you to go see the other part. It does not tell a story with a beginning, middle and an end. Viewers might want to wait until it's out on DVD and rent it, and then go see the end in theaters.

"M for Merchandise-Money-Motivated Movie Making." This motion picture was made solely because the thing it is based on is a popular thing. At no point did anybody involved in the movies production say "These characters have stories that need to be told!" or "This would make a great movie!" This motion picture was only created because the thing it's based on is so popular that people are sure to go watch it.

I don't know how I'd set it up, but I'd never let anyone know I owned it. I'd want to be the Willy Wonka of the theatre ownership world, minus the slavery. I'd go undercover pretending to do various jobs, such as old timey janitor and ticket stub person, and send free tickets to people I know couldn't afford them, but love movies.
