Does it annoy you when people cough into their hand?

I work with the public and am constantly appalled at how many people unflinchingly cough and sneeze into their hands and then try to hand me money. It’s especially irritating when they’re obviously sick.

Even toddlers know to cough into the crook of their arm, I thought this was common knowledge in 2019.

reply

It does annoy me but to be fair sometimes a cough or sneeze creeps up on us and pounces
'Carry tissues at all times' is my rule...can't be too careful in regards to not spreading germs!

reply

I must admit I hadn’t heard of that technique until my wife learnt it on a Montessori course, so yes I do it now, but I don’t think it’s as common knowledge as you would imagine.

reply

I still see randos cough and sneeze all over the room like wild horses...disgusting but true

reply

I don’t like it when people spit on the pavement either - yuck!

reply

Gross, and I see a lot of women do this in The Bronx
I thought that was a gross guy thing...

#womenarenastytoo

reply

Ewww, I’ve not noticed women doing it over here (yet).

reply

It's a foul behavior
I expect as much from lots of men but to see a 'lady' spitting at the curb...The Bronx has all sorts and many of them lack class

reply

I’m sure if I went to certain areas in the UK, I would witness the same thing. Luckily I live in a nice part.

reply

What part of the UK?
I'm about an hour and a half from my Bronx gig
The commute is a real grind but it's duckies and bunnies up here in the hills

reply

‘Sunny’ Bournemouth, right down on the south coast. I’m blessed that live about 5 minutes from the sea and I run along the beach in the summer. When I see the sun coming up and shining through the palm trees, I swear I could be in California.

reply

Sounds wonderful!
Palm trees in England?!
I really need to look this up;)

reply

Yeah, I live in an area called Talbot Woods - I can't describe how nice it is - I'm a really lucky guy.

reply

I'd rather they'd cough into their hands than at me.

reply

It is a terrible behavior...the worst is when you get the warm air from
a person coughing or sneezing right next to you...uggh!
That's the worst
Do people not know better?
I always let them know that they are gross and freaking me out

reply

Ha, that's what I wanted to say!

reply

Me, too.

reply

If someone is sick the same bacterias are gonna be on their hands anyway so honestly i don't think it matters at all.

reply

Sorry, but I don't agree with you here, Gedmend. People should have the common courtesy and decency to cough into their elbows, so they don't get a chance to spread their germs all over creation.

reply

What i'm wondering is what difference it makes from a contagious viewpoint.

reply

It makes a lot of difference, because people's hands end touching other objects, and thereby spreading their germs all over the place, which is extremely inconsiderate.

reply

You have the same germs on your hands as in your mouth with or without coughing, i guess it would be more of them on your hands if you coughed in them, but that is really all that would change.

reply

I still disagree with you, Gedmend The fact that there'd be more on your hands if you coughed on them is one of the big problems, especially because people's hands, without exception, end up touching other objects.

reply

I don't know the numbers, but i wouldn't want to have contact with a sick persons hands anyway, i'm not gonna be more ok with it because there are less bacterias there, i don't want any bacterias on me at all. One is all you need to become sick.

reply

The point that I'm making here, Gedmen, is that when sick people sneeze or cough into their hands, they also end up touching all kinds of objects, which also spreads germs far and wide. What's there not to get? What don't you understand about that?

reply

The point that i'm making here is you have bacterias on your skin anyway. They aren't just waiting in your mouth to come out. They are all over you. Avoiding to cough in your hand is therefore virtually meaningless.

reply

Wrong, Gedmend There are good bacteria and bad bacteria. When a person is sick and s/he coughs and/or sneeze into his or her hand, s/he spreads the bad bacteria all over creation.

reply

I know there are good bacterias as well, i have never denied that, all i'm saying is if you are sick the bad ones are gonna be there on your skin anyway. And that includes your hands. You can avoid coughing all you want but they still are. If you really want to make a difference then don't go outside until you're better.

reply

Avoiding coughing is not the way to go, because a cough serves a purpose; to get rid of what's in there. Bacteria don't survive that long on one's clothing, which is why it's recommended that one coughs into the crook of their arm, if they have to cough.

reply

I'm not saying to avoid coughing, but i'm saying to avoid people.

reply

The trouble is, however, that one can't always avoid people.

reply

The best you can.

reply

Politely ask those people to wipe their hands with a clean tissue before handing cash to you.

My problem with coughing into the crook of my arm is that I end up spreading germs into my sleeves. Toddlers don't tend to have that problem because they don't tend to wear tops.

reply

I've caught colds twice from handling money, and frankly, if I ever get another cashier job (heaven forbid) I'm gonna wear gloves, and this coming from a non-germaphobic person.

No, it doesn't appear to be common knowledge in how to prevent germs from spreading. There's a reason we still get epidemics, because people don't practice good hygiene, or don't even think about what they coughed or sneezed into their hand will end up on other objects.

While our society has higher cleanliness standards than our ancestors, we still have a lot to learn about hygiene.

reply

Money is an extremely high catcher for bacteria and viruses, if one gets the drift.

reply

Sad, but true.

reply

Yup.

reply

That's pretty bad, but even worse is how many people cough and sneeze right into the open air without trying to cover it from spreading with anything at all!

I don't have a car anymore so I'm a pedestrian most of the time now, and I'd be rich by now if I had a dime for every person who passes me walking along in a street and they cough RIGHT in my face at the EXACT moment they're walking past me and my airspace! No hand, no crook of the elbow, no even trying to wait until another human isn't right there in the same space. Or if they are, try to cover it, don't just cough right out into the airspace!

It drives me crazy. People around where I live have zero consideration for others, these days. I think manners are a thing of the past, sadly.

reply

The fact that people have zero consideration for others is a way of life everywhere, especially nowadays. It's absolutely disgusting.

reply

Not as much as when a workman or delivery driver asks to use the toilet and then leaves a big skidmark in the pan. 😠
