Best we don't know😳
It's that not knowing that keeps you up at night.
When it comes to unsettling stories our minds need closure, even when that closure is gory. The gory isn't nearly as unsettling as lack of closure. When there is no closure, like with Dr. Chilton in "Silence" or the guy standing in the corner in "Blair Witch," that's when our imaginations run riot. And that's when unsettling stories do their jobs and deprive us of much-needed sleep.
It's what you don't see...so true of the horror genre
shareI'd also nominate "Psycho" where at the end Bates breaks the fourth wall and smiles and you can see, just barely, his mom's skull superimposed over part of his grin. I realize there's a sequel, and we find out Bate's fate, but I like to think of the first "Psycho" as a one-off sort of thing. And in those terms we don't know what happens to Bates. But, you can sure as shit bet the people guarding him, and everyone else in that town, especially those using showers, were not safe in the least.
