does airplane from 1984 even have a story... why do people like it?

so im watching the airplane from 1984 and this movie in my opinion is just bad... i haven't smiled even once yet and the movie is coming to an end already... what is this? these jokes are just bad and that is a huge understatement... these jokes feel so juvenile they can't even be called jokes... do you like the airplane? if yes why?

reply

I agree. I never understood the hype for that film. Completely dumb and unfunny.

reply

Compared to what?

reply

Never seen it but I can imagine its like when I watched Monty Python. Its from a different time, jokes were different then. Different things were funny.

reply

Airplane was ahead of it's time. The style of humour is much more prevalent today than it was back then.

reply

Most definitely ! It was groundbreaking, pushing the envelope in its day. Many of the sight gags were especially hilarious.

reply

Watched it for 2 minutes, then I got bored

reply

Are you sure it's from 1984?

reply

If you are talking about the Leslie Nielsen movie, that was made in 1980. There is no such movie called Airplane from 1984. To answer your question, people like it because the jokes are very frequent, which keeps the audience from getting bored. Obviously not for you though.
Tell me, do you find The Big Bang Theory funny?

reply

I've enjoyed it,since 1980 when I saw it for a number of times, my first time, in theatres. "Your first time in theatres""No, my first time seeing the same film a number of times"."Surely".,."Dont call me Shirley".NOT 1984.

Roger, Roger. What’s our vector, Victor?

reply

It was funny the first time I saw it in 1980 when it came out.

On repeat viewings it wasn't so funny.

I found Airplane 2 so boring and unfunny in 1982 I walked out, along with the 3 or 4 friends with me.

reply

2 wasn’t nearly as good as the original but I did think Shatner was funny.

reply

The biggest problem with II was that they recycled many of the same jokes. The next biggest problem was that the jokes that were new weren't that funny with a few exceptions.

Its a movie of its time. What you have to remember is it was one of the first proper parody movies (not like that crap Epic Movie or Disaster Movie), and a good deal of the jokes were original when the movie was released but have been copied by others since, making Airplane! seem not so fresh.

Also quite a lot of the jokes were cultural to the time, if you didnt know that the black pilot was Kareem Abdul Jabbar a then world famous basketball player (father to Paula Abdul), some of the jokes centered around him will be meaningless.

For instance, theres a joke in Airplane 2 where Ted Striker escapes the mental hospital and he runs past some guy singing the theme to Love Boat because he's mistaken the searchlight for a stage spotlight, seems random, but they actually went to the trouble to actually get the guy who sang the theme tune in the TV series just for that 10 second joke.

Not funny to many today, would have been more culturally funny back in the early 80's.

And yes, there is a story, its based on an old movie called Zero Hour which was played straight but had ridiculous dialogue which Airplane! riffed off.

Back when it was released, Airplane! was a damn funny movie, but I can see how some of the jokes wouldnt work today.

But a lot of them still do.

... the black pilot was Kareem Abdul Jabbar a then world famous basketball player [b](father to Paula Abdul)[b] ...

WHAT???
Sorry galahadfairlight, I don't know where you got that piece of (mis)information regarding Kareem being Paula's father, but that is totally wrong.

From: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kareem_Abdul-Jabbar#Personal_life
"Abdul-Jabbar met Habiba Abdul-Jabbar (born Janice Brown) at a Lakers game during his senior year at UCLA. They eventually married and together have three children: daughters Habiba and Sultana and son Kareem Jr, who played basketball at Western Kentucky after attending junior college. Abdul-Jabbar and Janice divorced in 1978. He has another son, Amir, with Cheryl Pistono. Another son, Adam, made an appearance on the TV sitcom Full House with him."

On the other hand, regarding your comment that Airplane! was a damn funny movie when it was released, I wholeheartedly agree with you there. In fact, I just watched these highlight clips from the film, and I still find them funny.

Finally, I was unaware of the film, Zero Hour and its connection to Airplane! Thanks for that bit of info.

UPDATE: Just watched the following. Yup, Airplane! certainly was a direct rip-off of Zero Hour!

Well, norbit? First, let me welcome you to MovieChat!
Your first post, and instead of posting on the individual board where you could have found the correct year for a film you may or may not be familiar with, leaves me leary! I keep trying to find "Aitplane" from 1984. It dosen't exist.
What's up? Can't come here to discuss any films you do like? Have you ever seen a film?
