There haven't been any good movies for years.

Can anyone name any good movies during the past 5 years? I would like to know.

reply

Go outside and enjoy nature...unless you live in the southern hemisphere, summer is upon us.

reply

Some of us can multi task but enjoy the summer.

reply

Then multi-task yourself into searching for a good film to watch, stop bitching about it on message boards.

I'm guessing you're nickname isn't "Mr. Happy" and you're pretty much a loner. Time to get back on the meds. Good luck with the therapy...

reply

More like Mr. Hung and very popular. No meds needed, just plenty of fluids to stay hydrated.

In Kingswood's world...

I haven't been "over the moon" about anything during the last two years, however in 2015 I really enjoyed LaLa Land and a little Irish film Sing Street. Maybe it's me but I liked The Man From Uncle and recently King Arthur(both by the same director). Bridge of Spies which introduced me to Mark Rylance. Still Alice. Whiplash is in my Top 10.

reply

sing street is definitely one of my favourite films of the century so far. funny, touching, & it put a skip in my step for days afterwards.

reply

The music was infectious and the ensemble actors were terrific! Not enough people have seen this gem.

The Lobster
Mother!
Under the Skin
The Forbidden Room

reply

yay for the 'forbidden room' name-check.
guy maddin is one of the true original voices in film today. truly one of the greats imo.

reply

The 80s had the best movies.

reply

I won't argue the point. There were indeed Direct Hits that shook the earth.

ADDENDUM: Left alone Stallone putting "First Blood" down onto celluloid is a transcendent moment in time.

"They drew first blood."
"Protesting me."
"Spitting on me."
"Why are you pushing me?"
Scanning the Sheriff's office intake---gathering Intel---sighting the arsenal cabinet.

Sylvester Stallone

Terminator,Back to the Future, Nightmare on Elm St,Hellraiser, I could go on,lol

Terminator

Turning America topsy-turvy as Terminator.

- "Will you do it, Arn?"

- The suits.

---

I wonder how long it took him to sign on the line which was dotted?

------

Sure, he sold out in 2. But, "Terminator" ain't 2.

Arn

reply

Agreed.

I also think movies meant a lot more back then as well. You didn't have a phone that was capable of providing you with entertainment whenever you want it.

reply

Thats true, even now i prefer watching 80s horror to the new ones. They were much more entertaining back then.

reply

Recent movies suck, but two that I really did like:

Lion
Darkest Hour

Escape Plan
Ingrid Goes West

I agree with you that movies get worse over time. I have seen several hundred movies from the last 5 years and I am losing enthusiasm for movie in general. My favorite genre is thriller and even basic thrillers are incompetent now. The movie trends seem to be superhero with large budget, CGI, and very modern sensibilities with dialogue tropes. These will look dated in 5 year I hope. The other trend is small independent movie which tend to be politically elitist but there are creative ones mixed in. They tend to have weaknesses somewhere in the production, or gimmick endings. There are no movies in the middle, with reasonable budgets, R ratings, and strong characters. I don't understand where the money goes. These movies with CGI look like video games because the motion is hyper kinetic. They can't even afford a tripod. Spielberg seems to have inspired this trend of washing out the colors so the movie is almost black and white, or putting a color filter over the lens so everything looks dingy. Why does a movie like Benjamin Button look like vomit green and brown?

reply

You can always find a good movie once in a great while, but in my opinion the quality has generally been going downhill.
I would never venture to put an arbitrary length to it , such as 5 , 10 or any amount of specific years.
But , like a character in a Tarantino movie , I am old school.

Pardon my cliche , but they simply do not make em' like they used to

You're right. There haven't been any great movies in the past few years. Good, yeah, depending on your taste. I liked Sing Street. Ex Machina was all right but I wouldn't watch it again for a while probably. I enjoyed The Greatest Showman and even I won't call it great.
