The BIGGEST STAR in the world right now...

This is purely for fun...too many elements could go into your choice to be definitive but let's consider:
•Box Office totals
•Popularity of Projects
•Acting Chops
•Career Longevity
•General Charisma on Screen
•Other Skills (writer, director etc...)

I had a few in mind but i have chosen Tom Hanks as the greatest star right now...Saving Private Ryan, The Green Mile, Cast Away, Forrest Gump, Catch Me if you Can, Volunteers, Toy Story!!
The guy does comedy, drama, scary war action, animation...and you just love him in everything right?
Of course you do...we ALL love Tom

87 acting projects
54 Producer credits
$4.55 Billion Box Office over his career and hes not going anywhere...
I think he is our greatest living movie star!

Would you like to share your pick?

I have to say John Goodman; the man born to play live-action Fred Flintstone, what's-his-name on Roseanne, multiple animated Disney hits, one-half of what makes the Big Lebowski great, still active with a large name after making lists of movies longer than any sheets of Fruits Roll-Up after bouncing back from a hard drinking habit.

I'm surprised Sir Anthony Hopkins has not been mentioned yet. Isn't he currently making successful waves on the 'Westworld' show?

reply

Love them both
Goodman is a heck of a likeable guy and a great interview
He's very charming and funny

reply

He is no longer on Westworld.

reply

Leonardo di Caprio maybe.

I feel like he's someone who's had a long, illustrious career, but is also someone that many people would be excited to see featured in a current film.

reply

Yeah...his movies do feel like big events to me
Has The Oscar and a rep for big earnings and can act all day

He is certainly up there!

reply

Tom Hanks is annoying, Morgan Freeman is boring, Jim Carrey sucks,
Marlon Brando was and will always be the greatest actor that ever lived, nobody has ever come close to his acting abilities.

reply

Many would agree with you.
the point of the thread is who the biggest star is today. Shogun also factored in Box Office, how many projects they've had...etc.

reply

well, he's already given us that information, so what's the point?

reply

I gave the point of the thread.
I also very nicely said that many people would agree with your assessment of Hanks, Freeman and Carrey. Many might also agree that Marlon Brando was "the greatest actor that ever lived".
I'm not arguing with you.
What ever you or I may think of the a fore mentioned actors, you have to admit that they are BIGGIES as far as box office draw and the longevity of their careers. That was my point when I pointed out the point of this thread.
Get my point???

I agree with you on guys and dolls, they had it backwards, the best singer had the acting parts and the best actor had the singing parts, it's the only movie Brando did that I didn't like, he was just miscast, just like Richard Gere in Chicago

reply

[deleted]

on the Waterfront, a classic, no better acting on his part, everyone in that film tried to outdo him with their overacting while he just laid back and acted so natural, he was the best.

reply

I asked for Biggest Now as in still amongst us and working
I included several factors in the interest of fun conversation
Thanks for adding to our fun yawkee👍

reply

Jeff Goldblum has done well at the box office, $5,971,634,854 in total from all his projects including Transylvania 6-5000 (1985) 😉

reply

[deleted]

You can't go wrong with a bit of Goldblum 👍

reply

He seems to be a natural at playing characters that are very intellectual. Detective Zack Nichols on Law & Order is a recent good example.

reply

Yep those characters fit him like a glove. I've yet to see him in Law & Order yet but i'll get round to it.

reply

Excellent pick

Big earner!! Wow
Charming interviewee
Lots of fun movies

And holy Moses!! I thought i was the only one who recalled Transylvania 6-5000 lol
To be honest i mostly remember Geena Davis😬

reply

Transylvania 6-5000 is a masterpiece, and Davis never looked better imo. ;-)

reply

Into the Night is a good one, I miss those sort of films.

reply

Andy Serkis is up there! Plus he just directed a movie which will release soon.

reply

Huge earnings on his various projects and pretty well respected

Good call

reply

I believe it's currently The Rock.

reply

Hmm...might be a good call
Hes been doing a lot of movies and everybody seems to like him

Hes a really good interview too...funny even

reply

Clint Eastwood

reply

Awesome pick
The guy is a legend

AND Dirty Harry would also rival 007 in your 'Which movie character would you like to be?' thread
Two super cool guys!

reply

His acting and his directing.
Not many have had that kind of success.

Tom Hanks is so much more than an actor nowadays. Check out his Producing Credits on imdb. I'm a devoted fan of "Band of Brothers" and "The Pacific." I hear a 3rd series is coming out based on American fighter Pilots out of England. He's also Producing a Lewis and Clark mini series that I'm expecting to be excellent.

reply

Yes!
Thats why he was my pick...This guy gets things done and really is a force in the business

Band and Pacific are going to be watched and loved 30 years from now...i love those series and am thrilled that a third might be made

Lewis and Clark sounds like great material to work with too

Thx Padeen...i know what ill be googling later👍

reply

Hanks was also the driving force behind the wonderful HBO limited-run series, From The Earth To The Moon.

reply

Never heard of it, but sounds interesting. I'll see if I can find it. He's produced a lot of miniseries, including "Big Love" which was great.

reply

Ive got to see this one
Looked it up and it looks great
Thanks R_Kane

If you combine this HBO series with the film, The Right Stuff, you almost have the complete history of the US manned space program (absent the Space Shuttle portion), rendered with dignity, passion, class, style and love. The Project Mercury (Right Stuff/We Seven) astronauts were my childhood heroes. You’re strapped atop an Intercontinental Ballistic Missile, about to be shot into space?! That takes stones, AND heart, the size of Chicago. Those guys were, and are, heroes. (Cue Bowie’s Heroes in the background.) I hope that you enjoy the ride.
