Will you be watching the Oscars this Sunday?

Why?
Why not?

Me? I usually watch the show to check out who's there and I confess.... who/what the ladies are wearing....
I never go to the theater, so I can honestly say that I have never seen an academy award nominated film. For that reason, I check out the ones that look good to me. I watch them later.

My favorite host/s?????
Bob Hope! LOVED THAT GUY! FUNNY!
Billy Crystal, THE BEST!
Seth McFarland, Most hated guy... LOVED by me!

Tell me what you like/liked
Hate/liked
Loved/ Hated
Some of your fave Oscar Moments

reply

No way, no how!! Too much liberal politics have made an award show for films turn into a bastion of hate.

reply

I meant to add that as well.
If we are going to see women in black, promoting a cause, I refuse to watch this year.
The Oscars should be about film..... NOT about a cause.

reply

they are doing it again this year - making an awards show into a cause celebre - not worth it - I've better things to do

reply

Another cause? The same cause?
I guess I will not be watching.
I have no doubt that I'll be seeing the highlights on the morning news.
This whole show is suppose to be about FILM!
Being a woman, I have dealt with with the sort of crap that these women have had to put up with.
Buy time on all 3 networks! Let's TALK about this! Get Ken Burns to do a documentary on PBS on sexual discrimination!
The Oscars is an AWARDS SHOW! Keep it that way!

Favorite moment:

reply

LOL! The moment I saw David Nivens, I thought, THE STREAK!
I remember that as if it was yesterday! Great Moment!

reply

Don't forget singer Bjork's swan dress.

reply

How about Cher?????
She was quite the sensation in some of her get ups!

reply

Yes, she was. She really pushed the limit - thankfully she had the figure for it.

reply

another good one

reply

Ahhhh.... The pushups!

reply

Nope.

And it has nothing to do with politics. I actually think that everyone has a right to express themselves and to fight for a cause. There have been political statements throughout the Oscar's history.

I just don't care anymore. I stopped watching all awards shows years ago and I don't feel like I've missed a thing.

reply

You actually haven't missed much if you feel the way you do.
I feel that this year's Golden Globes was a huge turn off! I'm a woman, and I am totally for what the ME Too movement is all about.....or what it WAS all about.
I found it unacceptable at the Golden Globes. You DO NOT snipe at men because it is only men nominated in the director's category, while standing next to Ron Howard, (Opie Taylor) a fine film director.
Perhaps there should be a show for this cause.....
NOT the awards shows!

reply

It might be controversial, but it gets people talking. Plus as godewey said, it's all about the ratings. I didn't watch the Golden Globes, but I was aware of some of the political instances. While some of the "stars" are certainly hypocrites, I just take it with a grain of salt.

reply

I think everyone has a right to express themselves too but I do think there is a time and place.
Just seems there is something wrong with people using their celebrity to take advantage of it.
Almost like a person of power corrupting a minor or something.

It makes more sense back in those days.
Nowadays there is social media and it seems everybody knows where everybody stands on issues.

Having said all this don't you think that if there was a 24 hr. awards channel that people would watch it?
Every award show ever just being looped.

reply

I'm not sure. I mean when you have politicians that tweet their every thought, and have huge rallies where they can say whatever they want to their base, why should award shows be any different? Or perhaps they should have hollywood rallies instead of award shows? Maybe I am more blasé about it, because I don't watch. Perhaps if the ratings tank the producers will institute a stricter policy on political rants at these shows.

I really hope that video clips on youtube would quell any desire for an awards channel.

reply

“I mean when you have politicians that tweet their every thought, and have huge rallies where they can say whatever they want to their base, why should award shows be any different?”

Big difference between a political rally, where you would expect to hear political talk and an awards event. People tune in to see what is deemed the best movie, actor, actress, etc. not to hear political pious claptrap. The two shouldn’t be equated.

reply

I do think they should be different.

A tweet isn't really disrupting to whatever is going on at the time.
People tune into an awards shows to see who will win and be entertained not to hear
a political rant by somebody.
I also can't believe I'm having a conversation about something I could care less about. lol

I would hope so too but I bet people would watch it.

reply

Oh, 😏Deputy Dewey Boy, we could have so much more fun using our imaginations.😍 You know all too well how you get me flustered!☺️Whew!

reply

You and me both sister!
I may need a cigarette after tonight!
Or at least a nap.

reply

You make me laugh! You always put a smile on my face. And that’s a very good thing. BTW, Where did the idea of “having a cigarette” after doing the jollies come from...the movies? The hell with the nap 😴! It’s off to the hot tub for another round! A round of the red SOLO cups of course😏.

reply

That's a good question.
I've never smoked so I don't know if that's a real thing or just a movie thing.

I say nap but in the movies it's more of a pass out thing.
You do the deed and in a matter of seconds you're sawing logs!

I bet that hot tub has some stories!
I also bet you have a whole case of those red cups.

reply

“You do the deed and in a matter of seconds you're sawing logs!”

Speak for yourself! “Love Potion #9” “.....I didn't know if it was day or night
I started kissing everything in sight....”

To take a cue from Vegas, “What happens in the hot tub....stays in the hot tub!” Oh lordy me! 😌😉 I definitely should have bought stock in the SOLO product!

reply

If everything stays in the hot tub then you may want to look at
getting that damned thing cleaned.

reply

All the time, Deputy Dewey Boy. All the time. I need to say nighty night as I’m getting sleepy. I’m binge watching Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. 5th season. Agents meet Blue Man Group.

Parting is such sorrow; until tomorrow. “Sweet Dreams of You”

reply

Sleep well sweet princess.

reply

"I never go to the theater, so I can honestly say that I have never seen an academy award nominated film."

I take it you mean you've never seen the currently nominated movies?

Bob Hope and Billy Crystal are my favorites, too. I haven't watched the Oscars in probably 20 years. The show goes on and on and on... I'd rather just read the winners' list the next day. And thanks to the internet, I can check out the fashions, too.

Oh, and I'm sick of the way politics have infiltrated awards shows. Those in the entertainment industry are entitled to their political opinions but this is not the appropriate place to discuss them. I think it started when Marlon Brando sent the native American woman to refuse his award.

reply

"I take it you mean you've never seen the currently nominated movies?"
CORRECT!

They actually BOOed Vanessa Redgrave one year when she won an oscar. She started spouting a few political grievances, and she was chastised on stage for it.

Bob and Billy were the best hosts! They made the Oscars fun!

reply

I have not watched that since Dances With Wolves swept them undeservedly in '91, but I might tune in this year to watch what I anticipate will be a laugh riot with all these pseudo-left wealthy celebrities falling all over themselves heralding the #MeToo witch-hunt as the greatest social issue of our time in a period of obscene inequality and a potentially catastrophic war among nuclear-armed nation-states.

reply

The METOOs did enough of that on the Golden Globes awards show. I hope and pray that they leave it at home for the Oscars.

reply

Miss Margo,

How many of those “Do as we say; not as we do.” hypocrites will be frothing at the mouth about gun violence, while their armed bodyguards are offstage watching? They probably trip over each other! The ones that berate gun owners the loudest are the ones who have a flick playing currently (or will have) laced with violence from guns, knives, swords, baseball bats, etc. Some of those ignoramuses even do voiceovers for bloody animated video games! God, save me from the hypocrisy of these pompous, pious arseholes!

reply

Interesting! I never thought about that!
I do think that most of these celebritys really ought to think before they speak out. Yes. They are people... the same as everyone else. They are also hard working/WELL PAID people who can afford personal security. They seem to think that this celebrity status gives them a platform when it comes to speaking out against injustices. Unfortunately, it only makes them look like hypocritical fools.

reply

I haven't watched them in 30 years and don't feel I'm missing anything.

It seems to be more about the show and not the awards.
Red carpet crap gets just as much airtime.
Who cares who is wearing what.
Nobody really cares about the speeches or listening to people you've never heard of.
I don't care about your politics.
The people that vote don't always even watch all the movies.
It's not about the awards it's more about the show and ratings.

reply

Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes! And YUP!!!!
Seriously, when you put it all down like that, you really don't have to watch this show.
You are going to get the highlights in the morning on the news!
As for checking out any of the good movies, I eventually get to those in a few years.
I also have you good folks at MovieChat who recommend the good movies.

reply

I also couldn't stand that every 3 seconds they're showing the "stars" in the audience.
Just sitting there reacting to the person talking. So stupid.

I think it's just a bragging thing at this time.
You can say "I have and Oscar" and people will be impressed.
Many people have won an Oscar and just disappeared.

And the classic "It's just an honor to be nominated"
I call BS. With the Hollywood ego you know people are downright pissed if they don't win.

reply

"I call BS. With the Hollywood ego you know people are downright pissed if they don't win."

LOL! Have you ever seen that movie, The Oscar, starring Steven Boyd? !966. It's so funny!
If you haven't seen it, you should. It's so bad, it's GOOD!
They usually use to air it on Turner Classics on Oscar Day. I don't know if they still do that. Try an find it if you haven't seen it.

reply

I've never even heard of it.
I'll have to look for it!

reply

Ill watch some of the show but not all of it...ill probably switch back and forth

I enjoy the Golden Globes and The Oscars...the speeches, the fashions, awarding the artists who give us all so much to gab about are why i enjoy them

reply

Did you honestly enjoy the Golden Globes this year?

reply

Thats a big NOPE here!!
And you need not ask me 'honestly...'
I am always honest thank you

The 'Globes have always been a bit lighter in tone, more silly and fun than The Oscars

I understand that a statement had to be made about the situation in Hollywood but man did they throw the fun train off the tracks!
Hard to watch

If The Oscars follows suit im gonna tap out early...i want glamour and laughs and fun
I dont require a sermon

reply

I've never seen it but I would have watched if I knew Seth was hosting. He is really funny and Family Guy is such a great show.

reply

He hosted a few years ago. That was the big reason I watched it that year. He was his usual wonderful self. I'm a fan!
Family Guy is still a fave, and A Million Ways To Die In The West is a big hit around here!
Shhhhhh. I'm suppose to say it's just a guilty pleasure.....

reply

A Million Ways To Die In The West was fantastic! Oddly enough, I don't like The Orville as much as many people do, probably because I was expecting a lot more comedy.
