What comes to mind when you think of "truck stops"?

I think of rough looking truck drivers you wouldn't look twice at.

Burgers
Coffee
Jukeboxes...'know when to hold 'em'
Miles of road behind and ahead
The wind in my hair
Dont forget to buy smokes
'Fill her up'
Punch buggie blue!!
'Are we almost there yet?'
Metal on the radio
Crossroads of America...

Probably some other stuff

Thx
I went on so many long car trips when i was younger

🎶ive seen a million truckstops
And ive rocked them all🎶

Sorry..😁

reply

I think of how great they are to stop at on a road trip. I also cringe at remembering the term "lot lizard"

reply

This is the first time I've heard about it.

reply

Pretty sure its a crude term for a truckstop prostitute
Im not even certain thats a real thing but ive seen it in movies

reply

There's a seediness involved with truck stops because of the movies....

reply

There is and the rep is pretty much BS in my opinion

Its alway prostitutes or serial killers or dirty cops in these truckstop scenes

Ive been through a ton of truckstops and have never had an issue or been creeped out at all
I really do like to see the fellow travelers too

Plus, a place to pee is always a good thing!

There's even a 2016 documentary on the subject https://moviechat.org/tt2446990

reply

That must be a very depressing movie

Not in any of the truck stops I've ever experienced. I think you've got them confused with adult video stores often positioned along interstate highways.

reply

I remember seeing them in rest stops on vacation as a kid. We did a lot of traveling by car back then. Never knew what they were until I grew up lol. Here's a funny clip from "There's Something About Mary."

"I think you've got them confused with adult video stores often positioned along interstate highways."

When I made my coast to coast road trip on interstate 40, once I hit I think TX or OK, I started seeing a lot of "adult" stores (not necessarily video) along the way. At first I couldn't figure out WTH they were there, and then I remembered I was travelling on the Truck Route Express.

reply

I'm not sure I understand what you mean by the Truck Route Express but you obviously tuned into my point. Yes, those businesses deliberately target lonely, stressed-out truckers.

reply

Oh, I just meant that I saw umpteen trucks on Route 40, to and fro. It took me a bit to twig why there were so many of those places along R40, with many BIG billboards advertizing them.

I can only imagine how lonely and stressed-out those truckers are. I know it's good money, but damn. Lots of other billboards targeting truckers too.

Restrooms

Coffee, wind down time, Denver omelettes, biscuits & gravy, maybe a hot shower to relieve those tired, achy muscles and finally....some good travel banter and shared experiences.

reply

Nice.

Take a road trip sometime and be sure to have a CB radio. I guarantee you'll wind up having some great fodder for writing stories.

reply

Haha...that's a good idea. Thanks.

reply

Mmm, biscuits and gravy. That sounds really great to me right now.

reply

Didn't you partake of some of that while on the road?

reply

Sadly, no! Couldn't find any, but I wanted some. Along with some genuine BBQ and blues. Did find a place that served BBQ but it was in New Mexico, so it doesn't count and wasn't all that great.

reply

Truck stops must have changed since my day. That was pretty much a given at any one I used. That's why I immediately make that mental association.

reply

I only found a whole *two* truckstop restaurants on the entire trip! Can you believe that?

First one, the restaurant was closed. Second one was open, but the food was about as mediocre as food can get. It was lunch time so I didn't see the breakfast menu. They may have had biscuits and gravy, but I wouldn't take bets it was very good.

There were TONS of Subways, McDonalds, and a few other fast food places everywhere along I-40. Maybe truck stop restaurants are being phased out in favour of the fast food places? I hope not.

reply

Great breakfast.

Prostitutes and serial killers.

Without reading the other replies ...

Very tasty, and probably unhealthy, food; gargantuan helpings. The smell of diesel. Air horns. In the middle of nowhere.
