Best Actor/Actress Who Has Played A Superhero

We all know that we're awash is a sea of superhero movies and TV shows. Why? Because they make money. Why do they make money? Largely because they have a built-in, pre-sold audience, often referred to as fanboys. Superhero programming is a lot like porn. It doesn't have to be very good. It just has to be, and the fans are happy. And, like porn, the actors don't really have to be very good. They might be movie stars, like Chris Hemsworth or Scarlett Johansson, but most fans don't care that they're not much in the acting department. A lot of folks who've played X-Men haven't really been much of anything and the fans still bought it. I am NOT decrying this situation; but what I am saying is that there have been a few really good actors who have played supers, and this topic is here to recognize them.

I think Michael Shannon is an exceptional actor and that his General Zod was the best thing in Man of Steel. Terrance Stamp's General Zod was not the best thing in Superman II, but he was ONE of the best things in a movie that, even with the studio changing the directors mid-steam, is in every way better than Man of Steel. Stamp is an actor who has shined over decades.

I nominate James McAvoy as Professor X, and also Patrick Stewart, playing the same role, and Ian McKellan as Magneto, and Michael Fassbender as Magneto. Interesting that the two eminance grise of the X-Men movies have been so carefully cast, isn't it?

I nominate Edward Norton as The Hulk, and Tim Roth as The SuperHulk.

If we can agree that James Bond is a superhero--and, if Batman is, then so is Bond--I nominate Sean Connery.

Although her appearances have been, to date, limited, I nominate Gal Gadot for actually making me believe that she IS Wonder Woman. She just inhabits the role.

But the one I think is the best? The one who brought literally everything the role required, has been loved long after his death, and was a real, multi-faceted actor, and who was, not for nothing, a real-life superhero? You already know who I mean: Christoper Reeve, Superman. I have four words: what courage, and dignity.

Now it's your turn. They don't really have to be heroes. They just have to be super.

Chris Hemsworth is a movie star (or known) because of Thor, unlike Johansson she was already.... just saying :)

Sean Connery became a fine actor in his later years. Great as Bond, I will argue he was not a great actor or considered a great actor in his Bond days. And initially he struggled to get good parts. Of the Bonds, perhaps Brosnan had the best reputation before taking the reins.... rightful or not. I like him as an actor, but not as Bond. Generally and from our point of view now, yes indeed; Connery is the best actor among them (that being said, Roger Moore is my favorite Bond and we have not yet seen all that Craig can do on the silverscreens).

Of Superhero actors, we also have Brandon, Costner, Gene Hackman, Russel Crowe, Alfred Molina, Toby Maguire, Jeremy Irons, Fishburn, Robert Downy Jr, Jamie Foxx, Jeff Bridges, Michael Keaton, William Dafoe, Anthony Hopkins, Brian Cox, Ben Kingsley, Sam Rockwell, Michael Cain, Mark Ruffalo, Christian Bale, Heath Ledger, Gary Oldman, Morgan Freeman, Eckhart, Guy Perace, Paul Giamatti.... the list is long of great talents in the superhero genre and we are probably forgetting several of very good kandidats for the absolut top post.

Of them, my one vote goes to Gene Hackman. In my view he is perhaps the finest actor of all time. If in drama, action of comedy, he is always good to great. Even when the movie may stink, his characters always shine. His person is a little bit of a mystery to me, as each character played radiate different things and personalities... a sign of a true master when his true personality never really comes through, I think.

If you ask which actor made his character in a Superhero movie the best, surely Reeves is one of the contenders. If he is the one, I am not sure I agree with - cannot ignore Superman IV in the overall examination. Most of the supporting cast of Dark Night did it tremendously. Molina was brilliant as Doc Oc for example and few could do with Ironman what Robert has done... and the new Aquaman seem to embody that character.

Christ, I forgot Jack Nicholson.... changes not my pick though.

Christopher reeve.Bill bixby.Michael Keaton(the first and best Batman IMO).Robert Downey jr.Hugh Jackman(not a huge fan but i thought he killed as Wolverine.

Jackman is great. And great in the Wolverine movies: But I do not think he killed it. The reason is simply because Wolverine is a short, very brute and almost animalistic character. Mean and grumpy with a heart of gold deep deep down... Jackman was just too leading man in my view, too likable. Sure, during fights he became brute and in his last movie he was just right in his grumpiness... but overall, he was not the right cast. Who??? I do not know. But firstly he can not be too hansom, he has to be shorter (5'3 /160 cm) and buff as fucx. Generally unlikable. That is Wolverine.

While yes he's definitely the best, Michael Keaton is not the first Batman though.

You must be referring to one of those black and white serials from the 40s and 50s.Didn't know they did one for Batman.

Yes I am :) In fact there are two such film series (that I know off) before West came along. Both during the 40โ€™ies.
