Ever try smuggling stuff into the theater?

My contraband of choice is pop. Unfortunately, I have to ply this habit primarily in the winter months. Like most, I don't have many places to hid things on my person when it's warmer without drawing attention to myself. Wintertime, on the other hand, is a different story: I have a bulky coat that comes with spacious pockets galore, permitting me a place to hide pop, food ... you name it.

I used to take popcorn with me. No way am I going to pay that much money for just some popcorn. And usually also something to drink. Same problem.

I did that many years ago. My best friend and I would go to the matinee on Saturday. And that's when it was 50 cents to see a movie! We were appalled that a box of candy was a dollar. We used to go to the store next door and buy boxes of candy for a quarter.

If I go to the movies nowadays (which is a rare occurrence) I just forgo a trip to the concession stand. I don't need a ten dollar box of popcorn!

There's a nice theater in Burbank in an outdoor mini-mall, and they allow any food from any of the places in the mall.

I've gotten Chipotle and taken a full burrito into there, no need to hide it.

Pretty nice policy.

reply

In the past, like perhaps 15 or so years ago, yes.

Most places either provide a range of edibles at a reasonable price or will let you bring your own (As long as they don't stink) where I've been.

Are you US or British based? My experiences there have varied vastly.

Anything and everything. All I smuggle into movie theaters now is coffee, cause even the ones that sell booze now still don't sell coffee for some mad reason. Two to three hours sitting in a dark room, I like a piping hot cub of java. Used to be a huge pain in the ass. But these days, even after the shootings and stuff, they let you carry backpacks and shopping bags right in there, they don't care. I used to have a duster I sewed pockets in to hold wine bottles. Haha.

I normally stop at the supermarket and get some sweet/salty popcorn and a chocolate bar. I’ll bring a thermo with filtered water.

I have brought alcohol in before and even did a six pack to a transformers movie (usher noticed my clinging of bottles as I left).

I don’t bring in alcohol anymore.

I once tried to smuggle some friends in ticket-free when I worked at a theater in high school. Unbeknown to me was that the owner's wife was across the street in a diner witnessing the whole thing. They got escorted out and I managed to keep my job. πŸ˜“πŸ˜

reply

Oooh, boy...that was NOT good! You're lucky that your friends just got escorted out, and that you were able to keep your job.

We're talking about teen age boys growing up in a rough military town during the VietNam era. Like I really need a self-righteous, condescending lecture almost 5 decades later. In the context of hindsight and the grand scheme of things, that was pretty tame ! Apparently there are no foibles of youth in your past. πŸ™„

I liked your story...
My neighborhood theatre had a big hill behind it
Us kids used to pedal up and make a quick (and very scarey!) jump from the hilltop onto the roof
We took the fire escape down to the door which all the teen empoyees left unlocked (their smoking area lol)
Saw a lot of great movies for free but it was always a bitch sneaking out and climbing that hill to get our bikes!

I don't go hardly at all, anymore, but when I used to go regularly I would sometimes bring in candy I'd bought myself in my regular supermarket shop. I refuse to buy at the concession stand, it's all overpriced. I realize they make most of their money that way and in a sense they have to over price things, but I'm already paying for my ticket and that's the only spending I will do there.

reply

A very understandable position. However, as you pointed out, that's where they make their money. If they don't make money, they close. Then you will have to go to another cinema to watch a movie.

😎

reply

I don't go to the cinema much now but i used to take my own crisp and maltesers in, i'd buy an overpriced orange juice once inside, but my food was smuggled in via my handbag 😊

reply

I never go at all anymore now, because now even the tickets are overpriced. An afternoon matinee price at my local places now costs about Β£10/Β£12. That's just the daytime prices! I can't afford to go anymore, so I don't care if they close. The DVD costs the same price to buy.

reply

That is overpriced indeed. Here a ticket is about 4€.

reply

Wow, that's a good price, I would be happy to pay what you have there. My local prices really are horrendous!

reply

I believe that we have this price because it's only one theater for a small town.
