What do you remember?

Depending on your current age, you'll probably remember at least some of these:

collect phone calls
getting a busy signal instead of voicemail
reel-to-reel tapes, audio cassettes, 8-track tapes
taping your favorite song off the radio on to a cassette
Scholastic book club
Weekly Reader
library card catalog
portable CD players before anti-skip technology
Pong
wired TV remote - yes, wired
typewriters
corded telephones, including desk, Princess and Trimline models
AOL chat rooms
Netscape Navigator
pagers
fiddling with the vertical or horizontal hold on the TV
snow on the TV
keypunch machines and punch cards
breadboxes
color-coordinated toilet paper (seriously)
paper drinking straws
wringer washing machines
jacks
Tonka Toys

What else do you remember from the past?

reply

I'm relatively old and I honestly don't know what Netscape Navigator is, nor did I ever participate in AOL.
The rest is pretty familiar.

reply

I didn't participate in AOL either, but I did use Netscape Navigator. Wish I could remember the first search engine I used. Metacrawler maybe? Or something like that...

reply

Ooh... the nostalgia. Yahoo! AltaVista! Lycos! AskJeeves!

reply

haha yeah exactly, and having to type out the entire address http://whateveritwas.com

now all i have to do is push a g and google pops up.

Can you remember the first thing you searched for? Me it was Jack Nicholson. haha

reply

Bing!
hahahah
I saw a movie a few years ago where someone said "search for it on Bing" and everyone laughed so hard

I remember once getting paddled by my 5th grade teacher for defiantly eating Red Hots ( remember that spicy candy ? ) in class. That spanking board was imposing, patterned with drilled holes ( for maximum pain ). I don't think those even exist anymore in today's grade schools. Yeah, it stung but I was grinning when I returned and faced my class. It was considered to be a badge of honor with my young peers back then. 😁

reply

One of my brothers, about 10 at the time, was paddled by the principal. He told me years later that he probably deserved it for talking back to his teacher. Boy, my parents hit the roof when he told them what happened. They went to school and told the principal in no uncertain terms that he better not touch my brother again or there'd be hell to pay. They weren't disputing that he deserved to be punished, just the paddling.

reply

I remember the principal had a letter strap and would use it on students' hands as punishment.

reply

Now,you can't slap a kid because they have rights.

reply

I remember all of those except these:

Weekly Reader
Pong
wringer washing machines
wired TV remote
breadboxes
color-coordinated toilet paper (Why?)
paper drinking straws (This is back in now, in some places, but it's disagreeable, unless you like drinking paper.)

I also remember these:

Trapper Keepers
metal seat belt buckles that got insanely hot on hot days
floppy disks
dot matrix paper
Weepuls

reply

Trapper Keepers! They were popular when my kids were in school, but our schools didn't allow kids to use them because they took up too much space in their desks. As a parent, I was relieved - one less thing I had to spend money on.

reply

Some of these items are before my time but my parents told me they had a wringer washing machine and my late father actually got his thumb trapped in the wringer as he fed clothes through it, his thumb was badly broken and i do remember it being slightly deformed.

reply

I remember how we used to wash our clothes and take a bath.I don't think the other countries had the same customs.

reply

That's what's so interesting - learning about different cultures and ways of doing things. Life would be pretty boring if we were all the same.

reply

I always want to learn new things.I don't know about others, but i am a very curious person.

reply

I had forgotten about that colored toilet paper. I remember some of my aunts and my mother making flowers out of them to put on someone's wedding car. I think they had to stop making it because of something to do with the dye was bad for the water or something like that. So weird!

TV antennas on the roof is another one...
the Walkman
huge satellites for television in peoples yards

reply

The dye is also bad for your ladyparts.

reply

never thought of that

reply

yes, i hadn't thought of that either. Ick. Guess that's why that didn't last too long. Multi colored everything back then... like pink toliets and green fridges. So very 70s

reply

No call waiting and phone booths
