Joaquin Phoenix stars as Theodore, a guy who writes Christmas cards for other people. He's lonely and so when some neighbours suggest he gets an artificial intelligence operating system to help enrich his life he jumps at the chance. Little does he know that Samantha, the operating system's name for itself, is a Valley girl and can't help but try and belittle Theo every chance it gets with the line "Der!" or "Duh!" before responding to his requests in a preposterous and hilarious battle of condescension and public embarrassment. In the end Samantha becomes a Xer and runs off with the neighbours and xhe decides to explore xer place in the world.
