Political correctness...

What does it mean to you personally? I've seen a few posts today that used the term in a fashion that didn't make sense to me...help me out. Starwars and ferris buellers day off...evidently Star Wars sucks now because (among other tired reasons)it has become too PC...ferris Bueller could never be done today because...that's right...PC.

What was so politically incorrect about Star Wars or FBDO that I'm missing? If the argument was made for all in the family or blazing saddles...sure...I get it.
But Star Wars???what was so offensive that I'm forgetting? As for ferris...skipping school?charlie sheen???

Has too PC become code for I don't like women or brown people in my movie?
All opinions welcome...

The politics are involved in the movie industry too.

People have covered this subject pretty well but I will comment on this, this is usually used by people to shut down criticism. The vast majority of people that don't like extreme PC come from all walks of life, its not hard to find a black person or gay person that dislikes overly PC things. But people that try to defend extreme PC do what they often do which is stereotype, all white males hate PC, and then cast them as bigots. Its the same tactic as when a person is losing an argument about something and than calls the other person racist or sexist.

The bottom line is, it's about giving in to peer pressure, bending to what's " socially acceptable , " the antithesis of rugged individualism.

To me, I guess I'll define it in as simple a way as I can - by using examples!

PC = not using the N word when you're not African-American, or just, you know, not at all.
Too PC = People telling others that they can't wear their hair in braids because it's cultural appropriation - even though they themselves have unnatural dyed hair and wear fashion from around the globe.

Some things are just common sense and then some things are just stupid and not worth arguing about. But everyone has their own opinion on where that line is, so we all get into fights defending our line.

Political Correctness is a cancer,

People are lazy about how they use terms... So, they partly use PC as a catch-all for a lot of different things, but in particular those that relate to conforming to expected attitudes or views...

I think some mention Ferris Bueller because in their mind they remmeber the movie as being about a transgressive teenager, who flouted authority, so they mistakenly think of it as being un-PC, whereas there is nothing I can recall that was politically incorrect about the movie...

A lot of people's first brush with political correctness is in interacting with acedemic instittutions or corporations, either as students or employees, so there is a lazy association in peoples minds between authority and political correctedness. So they use "too PC" incorrectly sometimes. This is lazy both from a language point of view as well as in critically thinking about what one is complaining about...

A problem with political correctness is that it often lacks nuance and context, but we can't criticise it effectively if we lack nuance in turn and muddle the issues we are talking about...

As to the Star Wars comment, I don't know. There is a lot going on with the culture of those movies that it is like discussing a religion or something.
