Anyone like camping?

During the day do some hiking, fishing, exploring and bike riding. Then my favorite part. Sitting around campfire cooking hot dogs and marshmallows. And of course some ice cold beers! It can be just the two of us like in the first pic or a bunch of us like in the second pic. Either way it is great fun! Anyone else like to camp? Got any camping stories?

I have always enjoyed getting ready and setting up the big tent. We were no pussies with the campers with their kitchenettes and tiny bathrooms, although, I may have been happier if we'd had that! The first day was always great. Swimming in the lake, hiking, and the campfire at night. I loved cooking over an open fire and drinking beer while watching the flames. Even getting up in the morning and taking another dip in the lake was nice.....
After that? I was ready for home and my nice clean bed and crisp sheets and TV!
LOL! I loved it and hated it!

I like all that also. But the difference between us is I am not ready to leave after one night. We usually stay 3 nights and start packing up the 4th day.

I used to camp quite a bit.
Not so much anymore.

I was at a campsite during a tornado once.

I was also at the campsite while a couple of bears went through our stuff as we watched them.

Both were scary as hell. We still had fun and great stories to remember.

Camping is not my thing. I thought I would like it, but when my kids were young, we went tent camping a couple of hours away. It was a nightmare for me: 90s and humid, cooking and doing dishes in rather primitive conditions, constant worry that our 3-year-old might fall into the fire, and last but not least, mosquitoes so bad that the kids and I hid out in the car while my husband put up the tent. I really wanted to like it, but I just couldn't. I felt like I was doing all the usual "housework" that was made harder by having to do it outside while dancing to avoid being eaten alive by mosquitoes. Yes, we used bug juice but it was worthless against those fierce buggers!

I can easily enjoy a bonfire in my backyard, just a few steps away from my mosquito-free, comfortable bed. A bonfire in the backyard was a favorite activity of my kids and their friends for many years.

If you live in the country and can have bonfires and such, going camping has little appeal. It's much more exciting if you're stuck living in an apartment in the city. I only go camping now when I go to the ocean.

I disagree. We have a fire pit in our back yard and use it all the time. It is fun to just sit around it and visit and drink beer. But we don't have this in our back yard. So we still enjoy camping.

It would be some kind of yard if you had that back there! Though the dog doesn't look all that impressed.

A bonfire sounds so much more fun.

And now is the perfect time of year for them - cool, crisp evenings sitting around the fire, favorite adult beverage in hand, chatting with friends, neighbors and family, gazing into the flames. Less buggy, too! It happens a lot in my neighborhood. We've started a new tradition that I like to call drink-walking. Grab our favorite drink and start walking through the alley to see who's out having a fire. No fuss, and a great way to catch up with what's going on in the neighborhood. ๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿบ๐Ÿน๐Ÿท

I do this every time....nothing compares with a break near a lake or a forest....

I like camping and fishing. Just camping gets boring as hell after the first night. But you throw in fishing as activity day and night, I can lay out in the woods all week.

I'm so envious -- I have never been camping! And you make it sound so great, it makes me sad.

Why have I never been camping?? I'm wondering now.

Never to late. Just go get these things and head out to a campsite. Small tent. You can get a one person tent at Wal-Mart for less than $20. Or a four person tent for about $35. A cooler for pop, beer and food. Ice. Frying pan. Butter. Flashlight. Sleeping bag for each camper. Pillows. A couple fold up Chairs. Swimsuits (weather permitting) Bikes. And you don't need to spend a lot on food. We take hotdogs and cook them on a stick over campfire. Bacon and eggs. Usually the coals are still hot enough from the night before to make the bacon and eggs. If you think you will be making a lot of hotdogs you might want to invest in a couple of these.

You can use them for marshmallows also. If you think one night you want hamburgers you can cook them over the fire to. Get one of these.

Now go have fun camping!

That all sounds so good! Thanks for this list, actually, Sandman, very useful to have that from an experienced camper; will copy-paste and save this!

Ok, clearly there's a huge difference between camping in the US and camping in Western Europe. Over here we take our tents and campers to a campground with all kinds of facilities instead of going into the wild where you can go hunting or build a campfire. As a child we would go on holiday with our pop-up camper and I really liked it. I felt cozy and like a little adventure. Nowadays, I do kind of long for that feeling, but, no way, I'm not ever going to sleep in a tent again!
