What did you watch this week? (09/17-09/23)

Hi my movie friends! Hope y'all doin'well.

Here's my week:

Ghost Dog: The way of the samurai (1999 DVD): I can’t put the finger on what exactly made this such a perfect watch but every single scene had something good to offer. The music was adequate, solid acting, cool characters and unique cinematography but its greatness lies in the vibe, it’s hard to describe. The story is traditional yet, peculiar; the hero is torpid yet larger than life. This is ma fav from Jarmush now. When a movie makes you care a lot about something you don’t normally care about at all, it’s a good sign. In this case, it’s pigeons. I did loved them pigeons with a passion. Anyway, this goes right up there with great flicks of the 90’s like Pulp Fiction and Leon The professional. 8.5/10

Pan (2015 Netflix): I wanted to put something on Netflix to watch with my boys and Pan is the first one I noticed. I didn’t know what was awaiting me. Talk about destructing a classic and re-building it up from scratch. If you want to see Blackbeard singing some Kurt Cobain, airplanes shooting their machine guns at a flying pirate ship, Peter Pan befriending Hook and things of the sort, do watch it. To be honest, I found myself enjoying it all, thanks to a good directing, solid special effects and a nice performance by Jackman. I even wish I’d seen it on the big screen. 7/10

Total Recall (1990 Bluray): I hadn’t seen this in over 15 years and, man, I forgot how frickin’ AWESOME it was! I’ve been rewatching a lot of Arnold movies in the past months and this is definitely one of the top 3 for me. I saw a review mentioning that it’s better than Minority Report…. You’re damn right it is. It’s right up there with my all-time fav, Robocop. 9/10

Machine gun Preacher (2011 Bluray): ‘’ Sam Childers is a former drug-dealing biker tough guy who found God and became a crusader for hundreds of Sudanese children who've been forced to become soldiers.’’ This was a nice surprise for me. The true story is powerful, gripping and touching and it was well executed by everyone involved. 8/10

In process: Still watching Season 1 of Daredevil on Netflix. I’ve been a month on it and im at 9th episode. Every time an episode ends I never crave to watch another immediately. I enjoy watching one here and there though. I like it but the fight scenes are annoyingly dark. Like ALL of them.

Hey Stone,

I agree, Ghost Dog was an offbeat, interesting and entertaining watch but I wasn't captivated by it as you obviously were. It definitely had it's flaws, specifically for me the scenes where he would holster his weapons as if he were indulging in samurai swordplay. That just looked downright silly and gimmicky.

My watch this past week was Wind River. It was my first movie in a theater since 2015. That really heightened the experience for me because of the big screen and the intense, surround sound. It was also one of my most unusual movie experiences because there was only one other patron in the theater.

I had some expectations and a measure of foresight, largely due to the movie's board here, and for the most part, I felt like it delivered. I felt that Renner gave a very solid performance. Also, I've been fascinated with Native American culture ever since I was a boy, so that also influenced my appreciation of it. An all around good movie; yes, 8/10.

It was peculiar indeed but with the face and body expression that came with it, it just made me smile.

I had never heard of Wind River yet but I like Renner more and more. I had an infatuation for Natives too as a teen. Did some research at school, some debates on the subject and I even had a native girlfriend when I was 19

Ghost Dog was a good flick. I know what you mean about it being hard to define why. It had a certain atmosphere to it that I just really liked. Also I'm a Forest Whitaker fan since forever.

Total Recall is a classic. I avoided the remake because I just didn't see the point of redoing something they got so right the first time.

Thanks for your understanding.

Yeah, I never watched it too.

All Quiet on the Western Front (US, 1930)
In 1914, a class of schoolboys in Imperial Germany, fired up by the jingoistic propaganda pushed by their teacher, rushes to enlist in World War I. What follows is a long and painful process of disillusionment as they gradually learn what war really means, all the pain, hatred, terror and misery hidden behind all the flag-waving and drum-beating by those who profit from it. This is one of the most powerful movies I've ever seen, and I honestly think it should be seen by everyone at least once in their lives. Especially by those people who glorify militarism and so easily find war to be the solution for everything.

The Name of the Rose (Italy/France, 1986)
In 14th century Italy, a Franciscan friar and a young novice he's teaching visit a remote abbey where priests and monks from around Europe are gathering to engage in a papal debate. On their arrival, they stumble upon a series of mysterious deaths, which some attribute to the work of the devil but which the friar suspects are related to some hidden knowledge the church wants to keep secret. This was a very good movie. I think it's the most realistic-looking movie I've ever seen that's set in the Middle Ages. Bleak, gritty, cold and unenlightened. The atmosphere is such that you almost feel like you're there. You can feel the suffocating power of the medieval church, the corruption of which is a major theme in the movie. One of the best movies I've seen in some time.

I watched "Lawrence of Arabia", and "The Dark Crystal", both of which were played as part of the 2nd annual 70mm Classic film Festival at the Somerville Theatre.

Lawrence of Arabia is one of those movies I can watch again and again and never get tired of.

"Lawrence of Arabia" is one of my all time favorite movies, but, I admit to one thing: "Lawrence of Arabia", although I like this film, doesn't hold the same special place in my heart regarding movies as "West Side Story", which I never get tired of seeing over and over again.

Last year, at around this time, for their first Annual 70mm Classic film Festival, "West Side Story" was one of the movies that they played, and it was beautiful in 70mm, as well. Because they failed to get the film "It's A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World" in time for the first Saturday of the festival at this time last year, they played "West Side Story" on that same evening. Subsequently, I saw "West Side Story" twice during that first 70mm Classic film festival.

Lawrence of Arabia: Finally knocke this title off my watch list last year... rte it a 9.5/10. A true masterpiece

reply

Yes. "Lawrence of Arabia" is another oldie but goodie classic film. Glad I got to see it again. It doesn't hold the same special place in my heart regarding movies as "West Side Story", but it's a good film, nonetheless.
