What did you watch this week? (09/17-09/23)

Hi my movie friends! Hope y'all doin'well.

Here's my week:

Ghost Dog: The way of the samurai (1999 DVD): I can’t put the finger on what exactly made this such a perfect watch but every single scene had something good to offer. The music was adequate, solid acting, cool characters and unique cinematography but its greatness lies in the vibe, it’s hard to describe. The story is traditional yet, peculiar; the hero is torpid yet larger than life. This is ma fav from Jarmush now. When a movie makes you care a lot about something you don’t normally care about at all, it’s a good sign. In this case, it’s pigeons. I did loved them pigeons with a passion. Anyway, this goes right up there with great flicks of the 90’s like Pulp Fiction and Leon The professional. 8.5/10

Pan (2015 Netflix): I wanted to put something on Netflix to watch with my boys and Pan is the first one I noticed. I didn’t know what was awaiting me. Talk about destructing a classic and re-building it up from scratch. If you want to see Blackbeard singing some Kurt Cobain, airplanes shooting their machine guns at a flying pirate ship, Peter Pan befriending Hook and things of the sort, do watch it. To be honest, I found myself enjoying it all, thanks to a good directing, solid special effects and a nice performance by Jackman. I even wish I’d seen it on the big screen. 7/10

Total Recall (1990 Bluray): I hadn’t seen this in over 15 years and, man, I forgot how frickin’ AWESOME it was! I’ve been rewatching a lot of Arnold movies in the past months and this is definitely one of the top 3 for me. I saw a review mentioning that it’s better than Minority Report…. You’re damn right it is. It’s right up there with my all-time fav, Robocop. 9/10

Machine gun Preacher (2011 Bluray): ‘’ Sam Childers is a former drug-dealing biker tough guy who found God and became a crusader for hundreds of Sudanese children who've been forced to become soldiers.’’ This was a nice surprise for me. The true story is powerful, gripping and touching and it was well executed by everyone involved. 8/10

In process: Still watching Season 1 of Daredevil on Netflix. I’ve been a month on it and im at 9th episode. Every time an episode ends I never crave to watch another immediately. I enjoy watching one here and there though. I like it but the fight scenes are annoyingly dark. Like ALL of them.

Zdraviste,SK...
Wonder Woman ( 2017)...it's ironic that all this new "super - hero" movies are about alien technology...anyway,without the bad slow motion scenes,it wasn't a bad movie.
Shaun of the dead ( 2004 ) - playing on a ps3 with your zombie friend...that was insane...

reply

Shaun is one of my fav Zombie movies. It kicks serious ass

reply

I dislike the slow mo stuff as well and it was definitely overused in WW, which was otherwise a great movie.

reply

12 Years A Slave (2013) - finally got around to seeing it after four years. An excellent movie with some great performances. Well deserving of the Best Picture Oscar. 9/10

Personal Shopper (2016) - I thought I was watching a ghost story but I have no clue as to the ending. It seems it is one of those movies of ghost vs mental issues. But I am not sure about that. Should have known better than to have watched a Kristen Stewart movie. 4/10

Jackie (2016) - with all the extreme close-ups in this movie I thought a bunch of drunken film students were directing it. Peter Sarsgaard as Bobby Kennedy was terrible. Seems to me that a lot of the scenes were fabricated and Portman's performance was more like a parody. Her voice just got under my nerves. 5/10.

Triangle (2009) - I thought this was a straight horror movie about six people who are at sea on a yacht and get rescued by a mysterious cruise ship. Well I was wrong. This is a time loop movie which plays the same scenes over and over with an inexplicable ending. 4/10

The Sinner (2017) - this started great and if you had asked me around E4 I would have given this an 8 or 8.5/10. In the end I thought there were some major plot holes which I can't accept with a crime drama. There are some good performances by Biel and Pullman. We could have done without all the sexual interplay between the two sisters. 6/10

The Strain (2014-2017) - the series finally wrapped up this week. There is no doubt that the writers/producers mailed in season 4. One season too many imo. The first two seasons was as good an infection/zombie/vampire like series as you will find. I know the Zack character was annoying but overall a 7.5/10

reply

I also really enjoyed 12 Years-8

I liked Triangle more than you. 6.5

Almost done with The Strain. So far -Ehhh.

reply

12 years is a beautiful movie but it left me on my appetite a little bit because of my apprehensions. 7.5/10

''this started great and if you had asked me around E4 I would have given this an 8 or 8.5/10.''
What's that? A chess reference?

episode 4

12 Years a Slave was tough to watch in places

reply

Oh! I thought it was a movie, thats why I didn't get it.

Yeah, what with all the whipping.

reply

I watched 12 Years a Slave in a small, packed, avant garde theater, two weeks before Christmas, a time when emotions are already elevated.

During the scene of Patty's whipping, the struggling emotions I felt surrounded by was palpable and I wasn't doing that well myself.

I agree with you; it definitely deserved the Best Picture award !

reply

My wife left the room during the whipping scene.

reply

Stronger: should be renamed Weaker. Jake Gyllenhaal makes every movie suck cause he is a terrible person.

A Ghost Story: boring wannabe Tarkovsky the barf of cinema.

The Matrix: stupid, tin foil hat movie made by tin foil hat people.

Kangzman: The Golden Afrikens: the afrikens kill all the brits, boring movie.

Battle of the Sexes: where were the sex scenes? misleading title, refund, boycott, sue.

reply

HAHA! Nice.

I dig all your positivism.

reply

Hey, SK!

Total Recall is really fun. Unlike the remake, which is no fun at all.

This week for me:

Possession (1981)
TWO HOURS OF PEOPLE LOSING THEIR SHIT! This one has to be experienced with as little information as possible IMO. It was a tough watch, but in a good way. Everything in it was great, performances, music, cinematography. Some might hate it. I loved it!

The Fourth Kind (2009)
A movie about alien abduction made by people who didn't know what kind of movie they wanted to make. Is it a horror movie? it is a mocumentary? Is is an episode of Ancient Aliens? No one knows... This is the type of movie the guys at HDTGM would cover.

reply

I remember liking Possession.
Isabelle Adjani right ?

reply

What's there not to like? I can't remember the last time a film stuck with me for days like this one has.

And, yup, Adjani. And Sam Neill. Both great here!

reply

Hola Mina Chica Hey!

Haven't seen those.

Thank you come again

My favorite this past week is the PBS documentary series by Ken Burns.... The Vietnam War. It continues tonight for the next four nights.
I recommend this! It is one of his best series!
I am counting the hours right now. I can't wait to continue watching!

reply

Tender Mercies and Ken Burns' Vietnam.

"Harry, is that bag smiling?"

reply

Hey, MovieMan! Are you enjoying The Vietnam War Series? I find it addictive.
My stepbrother died there. I was 10 when that happened. It had a profound effect on our family, as I am sure that this war had taken it's toll on many families. I felt for Mogie's family while watching this.
I remember watching the news each night. I remember my stepmother hating our involvement in it.
What I find interesting about this series is the perspective of the North Vietcong. All these years later, we are looking at both sides.
Ken Burns has brought so much to light.

reply

Yes I am, and you are correct, Miss Margo. It is addictive. And I agree it's fascinating to hear from the other side. It was very sad to hear about Mogie's family.

I'm so sorry to hear about your stepbrother. I was in the Army National Guard from 1972 to 1978, so I feel an intense connection to the war and all those brave men who fought in it. Fortunately my unit was never called to go. By 1972 we were winding down our involvement. I have mixed feelings about the war. We were trying to stem the Communist tide, but in hindsight (always 20 20) it's probably a war we never should have gotten into.

I was surprised to hear about de Gaulle threatening to go commie if we didn't help them. I also didn't know that Ho Chi Minh appealed to us for help. Perhaps if we had helped him, they wouldn't have gone Communist. I don't know. I also wonder if our leaders lied to us, or really believed that we were winning.

Let's do this SK.

Z-1969-Yves Montand, Irene Papas -About an assassination of a left wing leader in a city led by the right-wing military.
An investigator is sent to find out what happens. Based on actual events that happened in Greece in the early 60's
As he uncovers the details he finds out just how much the government was involved. A great film about anti-totalitarian
views. Still relevant today. -8

My Cousin Rachel-1952-Olivia de Havilland, Richard Burton- Story of a woman who may or may not have murdered
Burton's cousin for his money. Good story and performances. Always leaves you guessing -7.5

The Nice Guys-2016- Russell Crowe, Ryan Gosling- I didn't think this movie was anything special.
A few laughs. A ridiculous story and by the end I really didn't car.-5

Clerks-1994 It been 20 years since I've seen this. Not as good as I remember it being but still good. -7

I saw Ghost but don't remember much about it.
Total Recall- just not my thing. -3

Almost finished The Strain. I have 3 episodes left.

reply

Yo!

The nice Guys: I enjoyed it more than you and less than most. 7/10

Clerks: only saw the most recent one.

reply

I haven't seen Clerks in a while, but this was me today: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zD8K6P7Mq9g. So, it's still relevant lol. /And I do have a guy who drinks coffee with ICE in it. Apparently it makes it stronger.../

by the end I really didn't car

...

"Frankly my dear, I don't give a dam"

Is the final season of The Strain worth checking out? I've been putting off seeing it.

Edited to add more nonsense.

reply

Iced coffee is HUGE over here. I personally don't get it.

Did you see this movie? I can't believe it got such reviews.

"Frankly my dear, I don't give a dam"
Yeah I know. :(

If you've watched the rest you do have to see how it ends.
Had some good parts some not so good.
They could have easily made this one less season.
Too many stories in the series that didn't need to be there.
Overall I still liked it.

reply

Not Iced coffee, just a regular espresso with an ice cube /not the rapper/ in it. Those are different things, right? I personally like my coffee cold from not having the time to drink it.

"Did you see this movie? I can't believe it got such reviews."

Imma go ahead an assume you're talking about The Nice Guys. I did see it. I wasn't all that impressed either. I liked it better when it was Kiss Kiss Bang Bang /from what I remember
Shane Black is doing a similar thing here, but in the 70's/ and it has Gosling and Crowe in it, two actors I just don't like all that much, so... But it's been a while since I saw it, so I can't really go more indepth and it wasn't all that memorable of a film. I also confuse it a bit with Inherent Vice, which I liked better, even if I didn't finish it. So take that as you will lol.

Generally I don't have a problem with dropping a show before it ends. I have just one episode of Penny Dreadful left to see, and I just can't get myself to do it lol. Anyway, the first two seasons were very tense, it started dragging a bit after that. But I guess I'll _have_ to check it out eventually... Even if it is just to see how/if they get around everyone dying from radiation poisoning!

reply

Those are different things Makes it stronger? Maybe, I've never heard that.
Cold coffee is like drinking hot water. Why ?

I thought Gosling's "funny" scenes were too forced. Didn't seem natural at all.
I actually thought Crowe was OK in this movie. Which isn't saying much.
Inherent Vice was a much better film even if you only saw 5 minutes of it.

It doesn't surprise me you have no problem with dropping shows.
The first two seasons were very good.
You could start it now and watch it , maybe stop, then watch it , then fall asleep then maybe finish it.
If you start now you could possibly finish by the end of the year.

reply

Maybe the sudden change in temperature makes the coffee react in some magical way, IDK. Hot water gets the bowels moving, so there is a point to it. Cold coffee, on purpose, I don't get.

Crowe is not a bad actor, but I just don't like the guy lol. The whole thing felt forced honestly.
Inherent Vice was just confusing, I had no idea what was going on, and I watched a good bit of it. Still though, I agree, a better movie. /this is the very informed opinion of a person who didn't finish it/

"If you start now you could possibly finish by the end of the year."

You joke, but tonight is going to be my sixth night of trying to finish The Bad Batch. I might get it done just in time for the next thread. I'm still working on Automata /I DON'T HAVE A WIFE ANYMORE!/

reply

I looked up The Bad Batch. Maybe there's a reason it's been 6 nights.

Automata ? Hasn't that been like 2 years already.

"I DON'T HAVE A WIFE ANYMORE!"

I am sorry to hear that. I didn't know you two had split up.

reply

There is definitely a reason The Bad Batch has taken me this long to finish. It's so weirdly paced /and by weirdly paced, I mean not paced at all/

It's been almost 9.5 months for Automata.

I don't know what happened with my wife... But I find myself yelling at robots more often.

reply

From everything I've seen yelling at robots might not be a wise decision.
As soon as you make their list it's just about over for you.
Maybe you yelling at robots has something to do with what happened with your wife.
Be careful.
